The University of Ez-Zitouna ( Arabic جامعة الزيتونة, DMG Ǧāmiʿat az-Zaitūna ) is now in the Montfleury district of the Tunisian capital Tunis . With its predecessor institute, the madrasa of the Great Ez Zitouna Mosque founded in 737, it is considered the oldest Islamic university and the world's oldest continuously teaching educational institution.
The graduates of Ez-Zitouna who later became famous include the scholar Ibn Chaldun , the lexicographer Ahmad ibn Youssef ibn Ahmad ibn Abubaker Tifashi , the trade unionist and writer Tahar Haddad , the politician and writer Abdelaziz Thâalbi , the Tunisian national poet Abu al-Qasim asch- Schabbi and the judge and scholar MT Ben Achour .
The modern University of Ez-Zitouna was founded after Tunisia's declaration of independence on April 26, 1956. On March 1, 1961, the Shari'a and Theology Faculty began teaching, which is now part of the Tunisian University.
Around 1200 students are currently taught at the university by 90 university professors, who focus on two faculties, the Higher Institute of Theology and the Higher Institute of Islamic Civilization in Tunis, and the Research Institute Center of Islamic Studies (مركز الدراسات الإسلامية بالقيروان, DMG markaz ad-dirāsāt al-islāmīya bi-l-Qairawān ) in Kairouan .
The Higher Institute of Theology began lecturing in the academic year 1988/89, where the following degrees can be obtained:
- Bachelor in Islamic Studies
- Master in Islamic Studies
- Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Islamic Studies
- Technician for Applied Multimedia in Islamic Art
- Technician for Art in Islamic Culture
There are currently around 300 students and 40 researchers working at the Higher Institute of Islamic Civilization . National diplomas for a first degree in Islamic Studies (DEUPC) and a Master's in Islamic Studies can be obtained there.
