Skive is a city in the Central Jutland , Denmark . It has been the center of the Skive municipality since 1970 and has a population of 20,573 (as of January 1, 2020).

Skive is located about 29 km west of Viborg , 36 km east of Struer and 94 km northwest of Aarhus on the Skivefjord , part of the Limfjord , in Jutland . As a municipality, the city ​​is 230.3 km² in size.

history

Skive was first mentioned in 1231 as Skyuæ and was crown property in the 13th century. The town privilege received Skive in the year 1326. It was 1443 by King Christoph III. approved. Since 1660 the city belonged to the official municipality Viborg Amt . In 1672 it had 569 inhabitants. City fires devastated Skive in 1715, 1725, 1748 and 1749. The February flood of 1825 created a canal between the Limfjord and the North Sea, which gave Skive access to maritime trade and a port.

As a result of industrialization - many smaller businesses in the food and textile industries emerged - the population doubled to over 6,000 in the second half of the 19th century. One of the larger companies was Skive Jærnstøberi og Maskinfabrik ( A / S Gyro ), which launched a legendary unicycle trailer in 1934. a. was used as a camping trailer.

Krabbesholm

In 1981 the bacterial species Cafeteria roenbergensis was discovered in the Limfjord near Rønbjerg . It occurs worldwide in the oceans and feeds on bacterioplankton . It is believed to play a key role in regulating marine bacteria levels. The scientific name comes from the place name Rønbjerg.
