Maureen Jelagat Maiyo (born May 28, 1985 in Kapsowar ) is a Kenyan hurdler who specializes in the 400 meter distance .

Athletic career

Maureen Jelagat Maiyo gained her first international experience at the 2010 African Championships in Nairobi , where she was eliminated in the first round in the 100-meter hurdles with 15.02 seconds and the bronze medal behind Moroccan Hayat Lambarki over 400 meter hurdles in 56.74 seconds and Muizat Ajoke Odumosu from Nigeria won. In addition, she won the silver medal behind Nigeria in the Kenyan 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 35.12 minutes. Then she got to the final at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi , in which she was disqualified. With the season she could not qualify for the final in 3: 39.96 min. The following year she first took part in the Africa Games in Maputo and was fourth there in 57.49 s. In 2012, she reached sixth place in the hurdles and with the Kenyan relay at the African Championships in Porto-Novo in 56.79 seconds and 3: 35.06 minutes. With her performances she also qualified for the Olympic Games in London , where she was eliminated with 62.16 s in the run -up.

In 2013 she took part in the 400-meter run at the World Championships in Moscow , where she was disqualified in the first round. The following year she reached the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow over 400 meters to the semi-finals, in which she was eliminated with 52.97 s. At the African Championships in Marrakech she was fifth over 400 meters in 52.96 s and won the silver medal behind Nigeria in 3: 32.26 min. In 2015 she qualified over 400 meters for the World Championships in Beijing , where she was eliminated in the semifinals with 51.92 seconds . In 2016 she won the silver medal behind the South African Wenda Nel at the African Championships in Durban in 56.12 seconds and the bronze medal in the relay behind South Africa and Nigeria in 3: 30.21 minutes. So she qualified again for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated with 57.97 s in the lead . In 2018 she took part again in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and was eliminated there with 57.66 s in the first round. In August she won the silver medal with the relay behind Nigeria at the African Championships in Asaba in 3: 35.45 minutes and was fourth in the hurdles in 57.27 seconds. Following the disqualification of the original winner, Glory Onome Nathaniel , Maiyo was awarded the bronze medal.

In 2011 and 2012 as well as in 2017 and 2018 Maiyo became the Kenyan champion in the 400-meter hurdles. Over the flat distance, she secured the championship titles in 2013 and 2014.
