Vera Barbosa (born January 13, 1989 in Vila Franca de Xira ) is a Portuguese athlete. She is the Portuguese record holder in the 400 meter hurdles .

Career

Barbosa's family comes from Cape Verde . She began her sporting career in 2005 at the JOMA club in Monte Abraão . In 2007 she took on the Portuguese nationality, which allowed her to participate in the national championships. In winter 2010 she won her first title at the Portuguese indoor championships over 400 meters. In the same year she moved to Sporting Lisbon and became national champion in the 400 meter hurdles.

At the 2011 U23 European Athletics Championships in Ostrau she was fourth over the 400 meter hurdles and set a new Portuguese national record with her time of 55.81 seconds. In addition, she was sixth with the season and set a new U23 record. At the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu, she was eliminated as eighth in the semifinals. In 2012 it will take part in the Olympic Games in London.
