Rutger Smith (born July 9, 1981 in Groningen ) is a Dutch shot putter and discus thrower . Smith is the 26-time Dutch champion and holds the Dutch records in indoor and outdoor shot put. He is a member of the Groningen Atletiek .

Life

Smith celebrated his first successes as a junior. In 1999 he became European Junior Champion in both the shot put and discus throw . The following year he secured the title in the shot put and the bronze medal in the discus throw at the Junior World Championships in Santiago de Chile . He achieved his breakthrough to the world's best in 2002 when he first reached a distance of over 20 meters with the ball and increased his best performance with the discus to over 64 meters.

2005 is the most successful year of his career so far. In March he finished second in the shot put at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid. In August he also won the silver medal behind the American Adam Nelson in the shot put at the World Championships in Helsinki .

Smith holds the Dutch record in indoor shot put with a width of 20.89 m, set on February 16, 2008 in Gent during the Dutch Indoor Championships, and the outdoor record with a width of 21.62 m, set on June 10, 2006 in suffering .

At the 2007 World Championships , the Dutchman won the bronze medal in discus throwing with a width of 66.43 m, behind the Estonian world champion Gerd Kanter (68.94 m) and the German Robert Harting , after having finished fourth in the shot put three days earlier.
