Steve Spence

Steve Spence (actually Steven Anthony Spence; born May 9, 1962 in Elizabethtown , Pennsylvania ) is a former American long-distance runner who had his greatest successes in the marathon .

After success in road races in the 1980s, he switched to the marathon distance at the beginning of the next decade. In 1990 he was the winner of the Columbus Marathon US champion with a time of 2:12:17 h and qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo .

With a training specially tailored to the heat race to be expected, he managed to work his way up to the top group from 25th place at the half marathon mark to km 37. At temperatures of around 32 ° C, he finally won the bronze medal in 2:15:36.

The following year he won the US elimination race for the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 2:12:43. At the Olympic marathon, he was twelfth in 2:15:21.

After not being able to qualify for the Olympic Games in 1996, he retired from high-performance sports.

Steve Spence is married with four children. He has been a track and field trainer at Shippensburg University since 1997 , where he completed a degree in business administration in 1985 and then worked as a volunteer trainer. His eldest daughter Neely (* 1990) is also a long-distance runner and was US junior cross-country champion in 2009 .
