Kuruppu Arachigue Karunaratne (born April 29, 1960 ; † April 6, 2008 in Weliweriya ) was a Sri Lankan long-distance and marathon runner .

biography

Kuruppu Karunaratne had his first international competition at the 1985 Asian Championships . In 1990 he was able to win the Singapore marathon . The following year he ran the personal best at the London Marathon . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he finished 71st in the marathon . A year later he also started in the marathon at the World Championships and reached 40th place.

On April 6, 2008, he took part in a marathon that is part of the traditional New Year ceremony in Sri Lanka. During the marathon, a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing Karunaratne, politician Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and 13 other people.
