Pere Falqués i Urpí (* 1850 in Sant Andreu de Palomar , Barcelona ; † August 22, 1916 in Barcelona) was a Catalan architect of modernism . The Spanish spelling of his name is Pedro Falqués y Urpí .

Biographical data

He was awarded his title of architect in 1873. From 1889 to 1914 he was the urban architect of Barcelona, from 1899 to 1900 he was also president of the Associació d'Arquitectes de Catalunya (Association of Architects of Catalonia).

He took part in the preparations for the 1888 World's Fair , for which he designed the Palau de les Ciències (Palace of Sciences) and the Palau de l'Agricultura (Palace of Agriculture).

In 1889 he won the competition to redesign the Plaça de Catalunya , and freed the square from the chaotic buildings that had arisen there after the city walls were razed.

As an urban architect, he had a topographical plan of the city of Barcelona drawn up. He was also able to realize some notable projects, such as the renovation of the Gran Teatre del Liceu , the construction of the current town hall of the Eixample district, and the reorganization of the Parc de la Ciutadella .

In the Casa de la Ciutat (the town hall of Barcelona) he built the stairs of honor (later changed by Adolf Florensa ) and made some minor changes.

When the Via Laietana was being built across the old town, he had the subway tunnels built as early as 1913. The subway did not start operating until 1926.

Falqués designed several street lamps, such as in Passeig de Lluís Companys , or in Avinguda de Gaudí (originally located at the intersection of Avenida Diagonal and Paseo de Gràcia ). The best known are the Bancs-Fanals on Passeig de Gràcia (a combination of a wrought-iron lamppost and a bench covered with trencadís (ceramic fragments)).
