The Torre de comunicacions de Montjuïc ( Catalan "Communication Tower of Montjuïc"), also known as Torre Telefónica or Torre Calatrava , is a television tower on the Olympic site of Barcelona .
The 136-meter-high tower was erected in 1991 for the Olympic Games that took place in Barcelona the following year. It stands on Plaça d'Europa on Montjuïc , a mountain in the southwestern center of Barcelona.
The tower was commissioned by the Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica . The executive architect was Santiago Calatrava , whose style is clearly legible. Much more than its function, it is the architect's achievement and its significance as a work of art and symbol .
Its shape should be reminiscent of an athlete who wears the Olympic flame. At the foot of the tower there is a water basin, the base itself is made of reinforced concrete and, with its wave-like elements, seems to adapt this motif. The building is kept entirely in white and the transmitter is clad with smooth metal plates.
As with many of the buildings that were built for the 1992 Olympics, the construction time for this tower was very short. Flexible climbing slipform and colored pavement concrete were used. The concrete quality used was far above the projected one in order to be able to shorten the construction time. The tower was completed in autumn 1991.
Another telecommunications tower in Barcelona is the Torre de Collserola by Norman Foster , which was also built for the 1992 Olympic Games.
