The band was formed in late summer 2005. Your first song Where are you, my sunlight? recorded the three in their youth club when the Sons of Gastarbeita (SOG) from Witten were present as part of their rap school project. The name means something like “group of one blood” in Turkish , but was formed spontaneously from parts of the name of two members. The third member was included via a featuring , so that the name “Grup Tekkan feat. Fatih Hira ”reads.

The authorship of the song lies only partially with the three young people. The SOG always had a number of pre-produced instrumental pieces with them for their youth projects, from which the participants could then create their songs. Grup Tekkan had used a piece they had brought with them, which was accepted as part of the project, as nobody thought of publication. They revised the piece and took it as the basis for the song. As it turned out later, the from Winnipeg in Canada originating Michael Manu the real author of the originally want Tell me wut u -titled instrumental piece.

The text comes only partially from the three young people. The “glazed with stardust” part can be found literally in the piece Nur für dich , which the SOG composed for the musical “Unter Strom” staged in Witten. It was also assumed that the samples came from the Magix Music Maker program . Michael Manu's beats were composed with Sony Acid 5, the SOG used Propellerhead's software synth and arranger Reason. Only the vocals and a few lines of text go to Grup Tekkan. This is in contrast to the self-portrayal of the band, who stated that they composed the songs (with the restriction: with assistance) in a nuclear power plant .

Contrary to announcements on the band website provided by the Superstar Recordings label, the group has not released another single. One such ( Ohne Dich - according to their production team, also in the style of Sunlight ) was produced in May 2006, but has been under lock and key since, according to the trio, there were disagreements with the record label. In the meantime, the artist contracts concluded at the time have expired and the group as such has disbanded.

The band was scheduled to make a comeback in 2018. This should take place with the single release of the song Ohne Dich , which was dated August 3, 2018. However, the release was canceled and the song did not appear on the market.

Media effect

After several bloggers , initially mainly Spreeblick , reported on the video at the beginning of March 2006 and sent other links to the video by e-mail, the band became known nationwide within less than two weeks exclusively through this form of viral marketing . The management of the group was provided by the music label Fortitudo Music & Services from Bremerhaven , whose owner Charly “Forti” Müller (until 2013: Romanowski) was already known through the management of the Internet radio station RauteMusik . The online version of the tabloid magazine Bunte and the radio station 1 Live then reported extensively on the band and thereby increased their level of awareness. On March 16, 2006, they had their first television appearance on TV total, where they also performed their song live for the first time.

Due to the media hype , several record companies became aware of the band. Müller acted as a spokesman in negotiations with Universal Music, a Warner representative, and Superstar Recordings in order to secure a record deal that was almost benevolent in the end. With success: on March 24, 2006 the first maxi CD ( Where are you, my sunlight? With the internet, studio, TV Total live and karaoke version of the song) was released by Grup Tekkan by Popstar Recordings , a sub-label of Superstar Recordings . According to the label, 45,000 copies were already pre-ordered on March 23rd. The rights to this had to be clarified with them because of the involvement of Michael Manu and SOG, but in the case of Manu this only happened a few days before publication. The rights with the SOG were apparently not cleared even after the release. The SOG were surprised by the success and felt left out. Here, too, Müller was able to provide a short-term clarification on a personal level: Since nobody (apart from the lawyers) wanted to risk a rights battle, they sat down and after several meetings in a conference call with nine participants found an amicable solution. The legal status of the ringtones sold by the company Jamba before the maxi release was at least questionable until then. According to their own statements, the three singers dropped out of their training or quit jobs in order to devote all of their time to music.

Critics of the music industry see the group's success as proof that freely available music titles do not necessarily lead to a drop in sales, but can also have a positive advertising effect. The speed with which Grup Tekkan and its amateur video became known is also an example of how the perceptions of public and fame have changed profoundly thanks to the new decentralized possibilities of the Internet. Grup Tekkan is part of a media hype , which is often explained as a prophecy by pop artist Andy Warhol , namely that “in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes ”.

On December 27, 2006, Grup Tekkan was voted 5th by the audience in the ProSieben show “The 100 Most Annoying Germans 2006”.

"Where are you my sunshine?"

The band's quick success is very likely due to the rather dubious vocal quality of the performance, which for that very reason and in its simple structure has penetrating catchy tunes . Therefore one can speak of camp-like reactions to the band. So the singers meet hardly a proper tone and chant deposits are more arrhythmic amplified by the eierigen synthesizer sound in the background. Their pronunciation is also striking, for example “isch” and “dich” instead of “I” and “you”, or “Isch miss your aten”, as is often scornfully noted in the blog comments. Clichéd text passages such as “Your respect is so great for me, irreplaceable” continue to serve widespread prejudices against young people with a migration background from socially disadvantaged families. On New Year's Eve 2006 Stefan Raab , Michael "Bully" Herbig and Christoph Maria Herbst sang a parodic cover version of this song as Grup Stefan .
