RauteMusik (short RM or #Musik ) is a German audio streaming platform from Cologne . It consists of several dozen music channels and, according to the media analysis IP Audio 4/2017, reaches around 2.6 million listener sessions per month.

history

RauteMusik was founded on April 20, 2003 by Yehya El Omari, his brother Daoud and André Surmann. Yehya El Omari had previously gained experience working on various internet radio stations. The project gained increasing popularity in the following years and asserted itself against other audio offers. It was therefore regularly expanded to include additional channels due to growing demand. In 2005 the provider operated temporarily in Lebanon in order to avoid the increased fees of GVL . The non-profit association RauteMusik e. V. and then the commercial RauteMusik GmbH . In 2012, the Hamburg media entrepreneur Frank Otto and the Nordwest-Zeitung took part in the company as venture capitalists . The majority shares are held by the founding shareholders Yehya El Omari, Timo Mauter and André Surmann.

In addition to platform operation, RauteMusik GmbH is now also a service and technology company that operates in the classic media and looks after customers at trade fairs and major music festivals as well as the official radio stations of Wacken Open Air and BigCityBeats through its in-house agency 2hype .

In 2013, the company initiated trademark action against the microblogging service Twitter , which started a music service in Germany called #music , but discontinued it a short time later. In 2014 it became known that RauteMusik GmbH had applied in a consortium, including with Ströer and Regiocast , with the NOW FM format for state- wide VHF frequencies in North Rhine-Westphalia advertised by the State Agency for Media North Rhine-Westphalia .

The platform currently comprises several dozen specialty channels. All channels broadcast around the clock and together reach up to 37,000 listeners at the same time. Over 300 presenters and DJs broadcast a regular program. The platform works according to the concept of crowdsourcing . Between moderated programs, music is played automatically according to a playlist .

Origin of the name

The radio was created in the IRC network QuakeNet , in which the names of the cross-network chat rooms are provided on the server with the prefix of the hash sign ( #raumname ). In the IRC network, which is mainly used by young computer gamers, it was common to name your own projects (preferably game clans ) after the chat room used in order to increase its popularity. This trend ultimately led to the fact that “music” in scene jargon became “#Musik” (RauteMusik) and the name was finally officially recognized and adopted by the project.

Trivia

RauteMusik is and has been a regular hotbed of various Internet and media phenomena. The Aircheck “Sex with Cousin” by Yehya El Omari and various of his phone pranks are very well-known comedy content in German-speaking countries. RauteMusik was one of the first broadcasters to play the children's song " Schnappi, the little crocodile " by Joy Gruttmann, who was 9 at the time, and thus contributed to its international breakthrough. A few years later, a RauteMusik DJ posted the video clip of the fun band Grup Tekkan on the YouTube video platform . The band was later managed by RauteMusik and briefly gained notoriety with appearances on RTL and TV Total .
