IRC network

An IRC network is a uniform chat network consisting of a network of one or more IRC servers in the Internet Relay Chat . In the largest IRC networks, there are many thousands of chatters at the same time, spread over numerous individual, mostly freely accessible chat rooms, so-called channels . The large number of visitors is technically only possible due to the distribution over several servers, which illustrates the importance of the IRC network.

The IRC search engine netsplit.de currently knows more than 600 networks, and it can be assumed that there are again a considerable number of networks not listed there. Each of these networks usually has different operators, rules, channels and users .

technology

From a technical point of view, the IRC network is a network of one or more IRC servers . The interconnected IRC servers continuously exchange information about the existing users , channels and the content of the chats. In this way, large networks can be created where it does not matter which of the individual servers the user connects to in order to participate in IRC, since the content is the same everywhere.

IRC admin

The administrator of an IRC network is known as an IRC admin.

An IRC admin has all the powers and rights of an IRC operator and often performs the same tasks. In addition, he also takes care of the maintenance of IRC servers and the IRC daemons running on them . Since he has access to the server's configuration files, he can set important settings such as connection options to other servers, access for IRC operators, etc. He thus represents a kind of superior for the IRC operators.

Information on the administration of a server can be called up on IRC with the command / admin .
