Honeymoon Suite is a Canadian rock band from Niagara Falls , founded in 1982. The band name was chosen because Niagara Falls is the secret “wedding capital” of Canada.
history
The band was formed in 1982 by lead singer Johnnie Dee, guitarist Derry Grehan and drummer Mike Lengyell. Soon after the release of New Girl Now , which won them a competition on Toronto radio station Q107 , they signed a recording deal with WEA Canada .
Dee and Grehan were able to win Ray Coburn as keyboardist, Gary Lalonde as bassist and Dave Betts as drummer. In 1984 they released their debut album Honeymoon Suite , with which they landed four big hits in Canada: New Girl Now , Burning In Love , Wave Babies , and Stay In the Light . The song New Girl Now reached the top 50 in the US.
The following album The Big Prize , produced by Bruce Fairbairn , was also successful in Canada with four hits: Feel It Again , What Does It Take , Bad Attitude , and All Along You Knew . Feel It Again reached the Top 40 in the US, the soundtrack of John Cusack's film One Crazy Summer belonging What Does It Take Place 52 1989 Bad Attitude in the series finale of Miami Vice game.
In 1986 keyboardist Ray Coburn temporarily left the band. He was replaced by Rob Preuss from Burlington , Ontario . Also in 1986 the band produced a track for the Charlie Sheen film The Wraith : Those Were the Days .
In the spring of 1987 the band wrote the song Lethal Weapon for the film of the same name with Mel Gibson . In the winter of the same year, work on their third album began in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Johnnie Dee was hit by a car at the airport and broke his leg several times. While in hospital, Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers helped out with the recordings. He wrote lyrics and sang in Long Way Back , which was to appear on the new album.
In 1988 the third album was released: Racing After Midnight , produced by Ted Templeman of Van Halen . The album was in the top 10 in Canada, but not in the US. Singles from this: Love Changes Everything , Looking Out for Number One , Cold Look (only Europe) and It's Over Now .
In 1989 the band released their first greatest hits compilation, The Singles , which also included the new single Still Loving You . Coburn came back to support the singles tour. It was the last tour in its original composition until 2007.
In 1991 Lalonde and Betts left the band. They were replaced by Steve Webster (of Billy Idol's Band) on bass and Jorn Anderson on drums. In that year the fourth album Monsters Under the Bed was released. This record features the singles Say You Don't Know Me and The Road . It was moderately successful in Canada.
In the 1990s the band toured frequently, but the composition changed frequently. Only Dee and Grehan remained of the founding members.
In 2002 the first new studio album was released in 11 years, Lemon Tongue . The album was released under an independent label. The style of the band changed from the original rock orientation to a more artistic one. In Europe the album was called Dreamland ; it contained some changes in content; so there were also the songs Dreamland , Radiant , Even Now and Just Love Somebody .
In 2006 another greatest hits album was released called Feel It Again: An Anthology , a double CD containing most of the band's singles, but also selected album material as well as rare and unreleased material.
In June 2007 the band officially announced their reunion in the founding line-up.
