Kyrie is a song by Mr. Mister from the year 1985 , which was written by Richard Page, Steve George (music) and John Long (text). It first appeared on the Welcome to the Real World album in November 1985 .

Origin and text

The song was written and composed on a tour with Adam Ant . John Lang worked as a copywriter for the band. The refrain is:

Kýrie, eléison, down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison, through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison, where I'm going will you follow
Kýrie, eléison, on a highway in the light

Kyrie eleison means: "Lord, have mercy". It comes from the Greek and is a part of liturgical rites in both Eastern and Western Christianity. According to Pages, he was initially skeptical about singing the Christian text that Lang had written because he did not want to make a "religious statement". The words, which are unfamiliar in the English language and in the pop area, also led to significantly more misinterpretations by the audience, such as “curious laser”.

publication

Kyrie was released as a single on December 21, 1985. The song became a number one hit in countries like the United States , Canada and Norway . There were different versions with 4:24 minutes (LP, 12 "single), 4:10 (7" single) and 3:38 minutes (edit) length. On the B-side of the single the song Run to Her was included. Different covers were designed for the different countries.

The music video, shot in the fall of 1985, was directed by Nick Morris. Parts of this video are from a tour with Tina Turner .

In Germany and the USA, a compilation was released in 1993 and 1994 under the title Kyrie , which also contained the piece itself.
