The song was written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance . Adams released the song on the Reckless album . In the song, the contemporary first-person narrator remembers his youth when he bought his first guitar, founded his first band and discovered his love for his girlfriend. As the song says, this represents the best time of his life to which he would unconditionally return if he could.

In 2001, however, Adams confirmed in an interview that the text was not at all authentic. Adams himself was only nine years old in the summer of 1969. Instead, he implied that it was referring to the sexual position sixty-nine . Co-writer Jim Vallance said Adams' views on how the song came about were valid, but he, Vallance, remembers differently.

The text “ Jimmy quit / Jody got married ” reminds of two of his former bandmates. This refers to drummer Jim Wesley, who left the band in 1981 because he was convinced that he could earn more money as a carpet seller, and Jody Perpick, who is still active as a tour manager and sound engineer for Adams.

Charts

The song was a commercial success in the US in the summer of 1985, but was only moderately successful in the rest of the world. Over the years it achieved worldwide fame and became one of Adam's most popular pieces.

In addition, the song came in 2004 in a hit parade chosen by listeners from SWR1 , in which women and men could vote separately, with women in first place. In the corresponding men's hit parade, it came in 10th.

Cover versions

The song was created by the punk rock bands MxPx , Green Day and Dr. Evil covered. Other cover versions followed, for example of the German techno project Topmodelz , Mega Mania and DJ Ötzi .
