The One I Love (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The One I Love is one of the songs on REM's album Document (1987) . The song landed at number seven in the American charts in 1987, and at number 16 in the United Kingdom in 1991 after its release in the United Kingdom.

The text of the song is very simple, the three stanzas differ only minimal changes to the text and by the alarming call of "Fire" ( Fire supplements). The guitar riff from Peter Buck , which is both played at the beginning and at "Fire", has a high recognition value . In March 2005, the song was put by the British music magazine Q at number 57 of the 100 greatest guitar tracks.

The One I Love is part of the regular repertoire of REM's live performances, such as Losing My Religion , Man on the Moon and It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) , which also comes from the album Document .

The title is often misunderstood by the audience as a love song, although Michael Stipe sees it as a brutal and cynical title. For example, the text contains the line “ a simple prop to occupy my time ”, which means “to have someone just to pass the time”. Stipe said in an interview with the Stuttgarter Zeitung : “I sang it yesterday evening and a couple in the third row looked at each other in love and held hands. I just thought, 'Oh my god'. "

The song is also playable on Guitar Hero World Tour and Rocksmith 2014.
