Document is the fifth studio album by the American rock band R.EM and was released in August 1987. It was the band's last album to be released by the indie label IRS Records. In 1988, REM switched to the major label Warner Bros. Records .

The album

Document was released in 1987 a few months after their rarity compilation Dead Letter Office and is the last album to be released with new songs on the IRS Records label. Document is the fifth regular studio album by REM, which is indicated again on the record sleeve. With the album began the collaboration with Scott Litt, who produced all of the band's studio albums until 1996.

What is significant about Document is that it contains the band's first US Top 10 hit ( The One I Love reached number 9 on the US charts ) and is the first album of their career to go platinum . The album reached 10th place in the US charts, also number 76 in the annual hit parade of the US Billboard charts in 1987 and came up to chart position 29 in Great Britain. The single It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) turned out to be a huge commercial success.

At the time, the band was on its way to becoming a major rock band with international fame - but not always to the delight of their fans, who at the time often consisted of college students. But REM signed a new record deal with the major label Warner Bros. Records the following year and their commercial success should continue to grow in the next few years.
