Childhood's End is a song by British rock band Pink Floyd that appeared on the 1972 album Obscured by Clouds .

Up until the 1987 release of A Momentary Lapse of Reason , Childhood's End was the last song David Gilmour composed for Pink Floyd. Inspired Childhood's End by 1953 and published in the English original of the same science fiction -Novelle The last generation of Arthur C. Clarke . Coincidentally, the novel also influenced the band Genesis at the same time, who immortalized the text in Watcher of the Skies on their fourth studio album Foxtrot (1972).

There is hardly any correspondence between the text of the song and the text of the novel.

Live versions

Childhood's End played Pink Floyd during their European tour in late 1972 and on their subsequent American tour until March 1973. The live versions stood out from the studio versions by the effect that they had a fairly long instrumental Mittelbau between the stanzas 2 and 3 and a step higher, in F sharp instead of E minor , were played. These versions sometimes lasted over 10 minutes, for example at the International Amphitheater in Chicago, Illinois in March 1973.
