While Heaven Wept (often abbreviated as WHW ) is an American progressive and epic doom band from Dale City , Virginia , which was founded in 1989 under the name Dream Wytch .

history

The band was formed in late November 1989 by guitarist Chris Galvan and guitarist, keyboardist and singer Tom Phillips. Both had played in a power metal band called Polaris the year before . Shortly thereafter, the band worked on their first song called The Mourning . As a band name, the name Dream Wytch was initially chosen. Chris Galvan's younger brother Brendan joined the band as the singer. For the drum post they tried a few local drummers, but could not find a suitable musician, which is why they concentrated on songwriting instead. In mid-1990, Chris Galvan left the band to prepare for Berklee College of Music as he was planning a jazz career . Another ex-Polaris member, Jim Chappell, joined the cast as the drummer. Other songs were created such as Necrospectral Exile , Woman of Shadows and Night Unbroken , but most of these songs were never recorded or released. A short time later, Phillips met bassist Chad Peevy and was able to convince him to join the band.

A little later the name was changed to Penance. However, since it was soon found out that there was already a band of the same name from Pittsburgh , the name Mass Cremation was chosen. After that, other songs such as Bound by Depression and Dying were created . Since the songs differed stylistically from the previous material, it was thought appropriate to rename the band again, whereupon they were named While Heaven Wept. This name goes back to Phillips, who had received a letter from his girlfriend and thus rejected him. While Phillips had a nervous breakdown while reading the letter, according to Phillips, the sky had darkened and it had started to rain. Then songs like Into The Wells of Sorrow and In Aeturnum were created and work on the debut album Sorrow of the Angels began. Meanwhile, drummer Jim Chappell left the band to start his own band, more like the English Dogs . Brendan Galvan left the group and joined the progressive metal band Fifth Season. James Whorton joined the cast a little later as the new drummer, while Kenny Thomas joined as singer and guitarist. In this line-up, the band wrote other songs, with Jason Stone briefly as bassist in the band. Due to personal problems of Kenny Thomas and Phillips alcohol problems, Thomas left the band a little later. Phillips moved back to his parents and continued to work on new songs with Whorton and Peevy. In the period from 1989 to 1992 numerous demo recordings were made, according to Phillips more than 100 , including many previously unpublished songs.

In the summer of 1992, members graduated from high school while conflicting with the law. In addition, James Whorton left the band at this time to get married and start a family. The band was then mostly on hiatus, but Phillips was able to finish the song La Mort D'Amour that year. In the fall of that year he took classes at a local community college . He became aware of a young man named Jon Paquin, who was wearing a Carcass T-shirt, whereupon he got into conversation and it turned out that he was playing in the death metal band Parasitic Infestation. However, since this band was currently on hold due to a guitarist who had dropped out, both began to play together. As it turned out, the two of them got along well, and so Phillips performed with Parasitic Infestation. As a further member, Phillips brought Peevy to the band as bassist. The remaining members of the group were Ricardo Garcia as guitarist and Shane Privette as singer. Various local appearances followed, including the While Heaven Wept song The Mourning . Due to problems with each other, Phillips separated from the group at the end of 1992. Before that, however, Phillips had met bassist Gabe Funston, a friend of the Parasitic Infestation members, whom he was able to convince to join While Heaven Wept. In early 1993, While Heaven Wept began rehearsing songs for the Sorrow of the Angels album , leaving the earliest material behind except for The Mourning and a new version of Jim Chappell's Gothic , called Shores of Desolation . Instead, the focus was on the material written in late 1991 / early 1992. In 1994 they went to Neptune Studios to record the songs The Mourning , Into the Wells of Sorrow , In Aeturnum , Shores of Desolation , On Earth It Is Done , La Mort D'Amour , Sailing Within and the recently completed Sorrow of the Angels take up. In addition, a demo was recorded for the song Lost (In Retrospect) , which Phillips wrote with Paquin in 1993. Earlier that year, an older version of The Mourning was featured on Shane Privette's Sampler Scenecubator , which featured other local bands. Due to the positive feedback, it was decided to include more new material. Since Phillips was not satisfied with the recorded material and Kenny Thomas had left the band, he decided to turn away from plain vocals. Instead, he contributed death metal vocals himself. In the same year, the single Into the Wells of Sorrow appeared on Privette's label Open Eye Records , which had a circulation of 500 copies.

In autumn 1994 the band decided to release an EP that consisted of the best recordings of the previous sessions for the members at the time. The band made 50 audio cassettes of Lovesongs of the Forsaken and sent them to various fanzines and other bands. The EP was released on CD in 1995 on the band's own label Sinistrari Records and had a circulation of 1,000 copies. Phillips had previously worked for Tower Records for a few years , where he met the fanzine editors Sargatanas and Sinistrari and founded the label with them. A couple of cassette releases had already been released there. By distributing the EP, the group was able to increase its awareness.

After the band finished the intro to Thus with a Kiss I Die , Phillips and Paquin split from Funston, who was struggling with depression . In April 1995 Daniel Ingerson joined the band as the new bass player and Kevin Hufnagel as the new guitarist. In the fall of 1995, the band went back to Neptune Studios to make recordings for their debut album. The new song To Grieve Forever was also recorded. However, the recordings did not satisfy Phillips and he let the band project pause again in late 1995. The resulting recordings were never published. He now devoted himself to other band projects such as Twisted Tower Dire and Solstice . The remaining members spent more time on college and Hufnagel started a solo project. In addition, Hufnagel and Ingerson dedicated themselves to the band Dysrhythmia . During this six to eight month hiatus, Thus with a Kiss I Die was completed, which was a mix of the old songs Bound by Depression and Dying plus some new material Phillips had written while in the UK . He also finished his work on the songs Unplenitude and September . Towards the end of 1996 Phillips made another attempt to record Sorrow of the Angels with a slightly changed track list. However, the other members were too busy at school, which is why the recordings were postponed.

In the meantime, material has been contributed for a split release with the Californian band Cold Mourning, which was released in early 1997 on Game Two Records . Includes an alternate version of The Mourning from 1994. A little later, the group went to Neptune Studios for the third time to re-record material for the album. The band again consisted of three members, but Hufnagel could not be present. In addition to Phillips, Ingerson and Paquin were again represented. The songs Thus with a Kiss I Die , Into the Wells of Sorrow , The Death of Love (an electronic version of La Mort D'Amour ), September , Unplenitude , To Grieve Forever and Cantique De Jean Racine were recorded. In the latter song, Ingerson can be heard on the viola as well as a guest pianist and a chamber choir . However, that song as well as Unplentitude and To Grieve Forever were not used for release. At the beginning of 1998, the mixing of song material for the album began, which, however, ran comparatively quickly because the members now ran out of financial resources and patience. The group changed its line-up for live performances, as Ingerson had already moved back to Philadelphia . Scott Waldrop and Jim Murad from Twisted Tower Dire joined the cast as guitarists and bassists, respectively. With this line-up, a gig with Twisted Tower Dire followed, before both left the band in mid-1998.

In autumn 1998, the debut album Sorrow of the Angels was released on the Italian label Eibon Records . For the release, the group planned appearances, for which bassist Jim Hunter and guitarist Scott Loose joined. Like Paquin, Phillips had met Hunter at school, although Hunter had not worn a Carcass but a Candlemass shirt. Hunter was also active with Revelation at the time, but Revelation was on pause at the time he joined While Heaven Wept. Phillips had known Loose since the early 1990s because he had jammed with him . Loose had previously founded the band Arise from Thorns and also brought his sister Michelle Schrotz into the group as a keyboardist. The five of the band began rehearsing, sharing the rehearsal room with Arise from Thorns. The band made their first appearance with a new line-up in early 1999 in Wheaton , Maryland , along with Arise from Thornes and Pale Divine . In the period after the concert, the relationship between the members changed: Paquin only appeared late or not at all for rehearsals. Two more gigs followed in Maryland and one in New York City with Ingerson on bass. After that, the group took another break. Hunter then turned to his band October 31, while Loose, Phillips and Schrotz concentrated on Arise from Thorns. Paquin, however, distinguished himself from the other members. However, Phillips and Paquin tried to move to the west coast of the United States . Paquin suffered a nervous breakdown there shortly afterwards, after which the two lost contact for about a year.

In the following period Phillips stayed in the Pacific Northwest and repeatedly came into conflict with the law. He also devoted himself to Arise from Thorns and wrote new music. The band later evolved into Brave, and for the remainder of 2000 he continued to write, record and play songs. While Heaven Wept was hardly active, as Phillips only rehearsed a few songs there with Trevor Schrotz from Brave. Attempts were also made to contact Paquin, but this failed. For Phillips, the end of 2000 was marked by relationship crises, legal conflicts and alcohol problems. He also separated himself from the other Brave members before they separated from him in early 2001.

Then Phillips reunited with bassist Hunter, drummer Paquin, and guitarist Loose and reactivated While Heaven Wept. Rehearsals followed, and it became clear that Paquin no longer wanted to stay in the band, whereupon he left the line-up. In the period that followed, the group rehearsed a few times with Phil Bloxam. However , as he wanted to concentrate more on jazz than metal , he soon left the group. After that, the group became aware of a former roommate, Jason Gray, whose band Forty Day Longing had previously split up. Over the next two and a half months, the band rehearsed ten songs in order to be able to record them on the date already booked. In early 2002 they went to the Assembly Line Studio to record the album Of Empires Forlorn . The recordings were made difficult by the illness of Gray and Phillips. For the rest of the year the band continued to record, but had to accept an interruption in the summer because another artist claimed the studio. This forced break was used to publish the first song material in the form of the single The Drowning Years on Maniacal Records . Before that, the German label Metal Supremacy Records had released the compilation Chapter One: 1989-1999 , which consists of examples from all previous releases. In the fall of 2002, the recording continued before the mixing and mastering was finished shortly before Christmas Eve . After that, the band sent various demo copies to friends who played in other bands, the album itself was released in early 2003 on Eibon Records. The publication was limited to an edition of 1,000 copies.

However, since they still had unfinished songs, they went back to the studio shortly afterwards to finish recording the song In Aeturnum . On this occasion they remastered the album. Meanwhile, the British label Rage of Achilles Records became aware of While Heaven Wept, which actually wanted to re- release the single The Drowning Years . However, the group declined to avoid trouble with Maniacal Records, instead Of Empires Forlorn was remastered and re-released with a modified track list in Europe in February 2004 and in North America and Great Britain in October 2003. Especially through the re-release, the band was able to increase its popularity considerably. In 2003 a few appearances were held, including at the Born Too Late Festival in Rochester , New York , and another in Baltimore , with Michelle Schrotz again being present. In the same year the band planned their first European tour and negotiated with the organizers of the German Doom Shall Rise Festival. Since both Schrotz and Loose announced that they could not take part in the tour, the plans were in danger, attempts to find suitable replacement musicians failed. At first it seemed as if Dennis Cornelius from Revelation could have stepped in as guitarist, but this was not possible when he joined Place of Skulls . Instead, Angelo Tringali, a long-time friend of the band and a member of Cold Mourning, joined the cast. The difficulty proved that he lived about 3,000 miles away from the other members. It was similar with the replacement keyboarder Fred Provoost, who was brought in to help by the Dutch band Whispering Gallery. The band became aware of Provoost through Whispering Gallery drummer Pascal Spierings, who was a fan and friend of the band. After the tour of Europe, the band returned to the USA and eventually separated from drummer Jason Gray.

In July 2004, Phillips asked Brave drummer Trevor Schrotz if he would like to take part in the recording of the album Vast Oceans Lachrymose . After he agreed, rehearsals followed over the next few weeks to prepare for the recordings and to write songs together. The band rehearsed together in one room, which had only happened four times since 2004. After the band had recorded several demos in different studios, they went to the recording studio of Chris Salamone. The actual recordings for the album began in April 2005. The group had prepared ten songs for this. However, since the recordings took a long time, the second half of the album was recorded in 2006. In the time after that, the members took care of other band projects, Phillips had a love affair. Since the members had bought new and better equipment towards the end of the recordings, the financial resources were almost completely used up. By working on the new song Finality , the group was revived. In 2008, Rain Irving was another singer. Vast Oceans Lachrymose was released in November 2009. The release was initially planned for the Greek label Black Lotus Records , but could not take place because the label was previously closed. They avoided the release on the Italian label Cruz del Sur Music , which had already shown interest in working with the group in previous years.

After that, the band held concerts for the first time in five years. She played in the second edition of the Born Too Late Festival, together with Argus , Revelation, Pale Divine and Iron Man , among others . In early 2010 they went on tour through Pennsylvania with Argus , who soon befriended While Heaven Wept. On February 6th, the band co-headlined the third Hammer of Doom in Würzburg together with Saint Vitus and Asphyx . This was the band's first appearance in Europe when the cast consisted of only permanent members. It was also the first overseas appearance since 2004. It was also the fourth appearance with the new singer Rain Irving. Previously, Iron Code Records , High Roller Records , Maniacal Records and Cruz Del Sur Music for twentieth anniversary of the band Sorrow of the Angels , Of Empires Forlorn and Vast Oceans Lachrymose on record re-released. Sorrow of the Angels and Of Empires Forlorn were also re-released on CD. The performance on the Hammer of Doom was professionally recorded on video. The audio material was mixed by Phillips and Chris Salamone in the summer and fall of 2010. They were in contact with Streetclip TV, which had also recorded the concert. The two sent their edited audio to Streetclip TV, which edited the video. This resulted in the DVD Triumph: Tragedy: Transcendence - Live at the Hammer of Doom Festival , which was released by Cruz Del Sur Music, High Roller Records and Iron Kodex Records. The DVD was released in combination with a live CD and had a circulation of 3,000 copies. In addition, the album was also released on the double LP , which was limited to 1,000 units.

On Monday morning after the performance at the festival, the band was contacted by Nuclear Blast . After negotiations in the months that followed, the group signed a record deal with the label. Work on new song material then began in Salamone's recording studio, about a month after Triumph: Tragedy: Transcendence - Live at the Hammer of Doom Festival had been mastered. Before these recordings for the album Fear of Infinity had begun, Jason Lingle had come to the band as a keyboardist because Schrotz was on a maternity leave. Lingle had come to the band through Irving, as both had already worked together in the band Altura. Initially only intended as a temporary solution, Lingle remained permanently in the band. The group never had time to rehearse the material together as a band, as Nuclear Blast had already set a date for the album's release. They were also preparing for an appearance in Raleigh , North Carolina , which was to be Lingle's first appearance. The band worked on new songs and rewrote them several times before the album was released in April 2011. The album reached number 98 in the German album charts. The songs of Vast Oceans Lachrymose and Fear of Infinity both come from the songwriting sessions of 2004. Phillips had actually planned to publish the songs of Fear of Infinity on Vast Oceans Lachrymose . However, while writing the song The Furthest Shore , he had noticed that he had to adjust to, according to his statement, “not to interrupt the emotional flow”.

In the first half of 2011 the band gave many interviews and played numerous international concerts. In March, While Heaven Wept co-headlined the sixth Up the Hammers Festival in Athens with Solstice and Dawn of Winter . Other bands that played at the festival included Sorcerer , Ostrogoth and Procession . After returning to the US, the band led a benefit concert in Raleigh, North Carolina for longtime friend Tony "Dio" Leonard, who had promoted local metal events for years and now needed support after surgery. While Heaven Wept played with Twisted Tower Dire and Widow, among others . In April, the band returned to Würzburg to take part in the fifth edition of the Hammer of Doom Festival, where they were announced as co-headliners alongside Pentagram and Primordial , with whom they would later hold a tour. Since the band knew that this concert would also be resumed, they decided on a completely different setlist than last year. The festival was also used to play songs from the new album live for the first time. At the end of May they went on a European tour together with Primordial and Alcest with appearances at the Metalfest Open Airs in Germany, Austria , Switzerland , Hungary and the Czech Republic as well as appearances in smaller clubs. Saxon , Arch Enemy , Kreator and Destruction also performed at the festivals . The tour included a total of ten appearances. After that the band returned to the USA and paused for a few months before the last gig for 2011 was held on the ProgPower USA on September 17th . This was the first gig in which Michelle Schrotz and Jason Lingle were active together as keyboard players.

Then the band worked on the new song material that they had written between 2009 and 2011. In 2012 the band played at the fourth Pathfinder Metalfest. The band had to cancel their appearance at the third Days of the Doomed Festival in 2013 for family reasons. In 2014, for the 25th anniversary of the band, the album Suspended at Aphelion was released via Nuclear Blast, which consists of a single song, which was divided into eleven parts. A total of eleven musicians can be heard on the album, seven of them are permanent members. The guest musicians who were not only active on the album but also live with the band include Mark Zonder and Victor Arduini, both of whom were formerly active in Fates Warning . The other two guest musicians on the album are Chris Ladd and Mark Shuping.

style

In the band biography on whileheavenwept.com , Tom Phillips stated that the band was initially influenced by the thrash metal movement of the time, as well as early death metal, doom metal and progressive metal. In their first song The Mourning , Phillips processed riffs from Candlemass. Brendan Galvan's vocals at the time were a mixture of Geoff Tate and David Bowie . Later songs like Bound by Depression and Dying are darker and more personal, as they were shaped by Phillips problems at the time such as separation from his girlfriend, problems with his parents and at school, and alcohol and other drug use . Until 1992, the group was influenced by other bands such as Xecutioner or Obituary , Sepultura , Morbid Angel , Napalm Death , Nihilist and Entombed . Initially, they focused on clear vocals before using guttural vocals for the single Into the Wells of Sorrow .

According to Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic , Lovesongs of the Forsaken features sad, classic Doom Metal . Chapter One: 1989-1999 offers melancholic and orchestrated Doom Metal.

Martin Popoff assigned the band to Epic Doom in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 4: The '00s in his review of Of Empires Forlorn . Similarities to My Dying Bride , Anathema , Opeth and Nightingale can be heard. The music is progressive and the singing is clear, with lyrics that are explicit and sullen. David Perri noted in the same book that Vast Oceans Lachrymose is nothing for in between, which you can already see in the mostly very long songs. Influences from Candlemass and Iron Maiden to the middle creative period can be heard on the album .

Suspended at Aphelion is the first real concept album, Phillips made clear to livereviewer.com . Alleged other concept albums were only thematically loosely related or unintentionally going in the same direction song collections. Rock Hard's Buffo noted that Suspended at Aphelion is the band's most progressive album to date. In an interview with him, Phillips stated that "aphelion" is a Greek term that denotes the farthest point from the sun. In this case, the sun symbolizes goals and ambitions for the band, which one wants to achieve but cannot, as much as one wants to. In general one could say (he reported in another interview) that there are things that cannot be changed, and that one has to learn to accept them.

Marc Halupczok from Metal Hammer assigned the music on Of Empires Forlorn to Epic Doom, whereby "a song lasts longer than three minutes and the stanza / chorus / verse does not exist". The singing in the songs is gentle and haunting. In addition, there is an "exquisite mixture of pulsating riffs , whistled keyboard sounds and brilliant melodies" in the songs . One issue later, Melanie Aschenbrenner stated: “Her songs are as far as the landscape recordings from ' The Lord of the Rings ', their melodies roll in in big waves and pretty spray heads, and their epic compositions should be both Doom and Prog fans spontaneously get wet eyes ”. In an interview with her, Phillips stated that the album sounds positive compared to previous releases, which is mainly due to the fact that the band often plays in major , which is comparatively rare for this genre. In addition, the text has changed because he has now left his bad experiences behind and can now look back on it. Five years later, Detlef Dengler reviewed the album Vast Oceans Lachrymose from the same magazine . The sound carrier offers a “roller coaster ride full of drama, thrills and tension”. You can hear influences from Pink Floyd and classical music to the music . The vocals used in the songs are voluminous and clear. The song To Wander the Void is reminiscent of Fates Warning in the time of John Arch and could also have found a place on their albums The Specter Within and Awaken the Guardian . Thomas Sonder described the music one issue later as a mixture of epic doom, progressive metal, thrash metal and rock music of the 1970s. In an interview with him, Phillips stated that the lyrics are shaped by the themes of the sea and emotions. He is very interested in the former and it is used for numerous metaphors that have to do with feelings. On Vast Oceans Lachrymose you can also hear the water sounds of ebb and flow. The music is like a kind of diary for him and he uses it to process his past experiences. Exactly one year later Detlef Dengler reviewed the live album Triumph: Tragedy: Transcendence - Live at the Hammer of Doom Festival and found that the band is reminiscent of Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and the early Fates Warning. In the song Sorrow of the Angels you can tell that the band makes use of improvisation. In another issue, Phillips stated in an interview with Dengler that since the arrival of Rain Iriving he is now better able to improvise live. In the same issue, Marc Halupczok reviewed the album Fear of Infinity . The album sounds “mature, but at the same time fresh and exciting like a debut” and described the music as a mixture of Pain of Salvation , Opeth and Black Sabbath . The songs are calm, doomy and progressive and don't sound aimless, but catchy. Songs like Destroyer of Solace would have folk metal influences . All in all, in contrast to its predecessor, the album sounds "[g] more depressed, muted, darker, more doomy and clumsy". Kathrin Riedl stated in another Metal-Hammer edition that the band on Suspended at Aphelion “doomy prog with epic heavy metal ”. In the songs you use “clear vocals with one or the other harsh outcry”. In addition, string instruments and a piano are occasionally used.
