history

The band was formed in 1998 by guitarist Kevin Hufnagel and bassist Clayton Ingerson. The two had known each other since high school , with Ingerson majoring in music at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia . Together they drafted the first songs and started looking for a drummer, whom they found in 1999 with Jeff Eber. The first gigs followed in Philadelphia and they also played at Club Stalag 13 together with Discordance Axis and Ruins . In 2000, Contradiction, the first self-released album, followed, whereby the sound carrier was limited to 500 copies. The album was recorded in a friend's basement studio within four days. The first self-organized tour also followed. The second album No Interference was released in 2001. Further appearances followed, as well as a split release together with xthoughtstreamsx. Another split release followed in 2002 with Technician. In May 2003 the third album Pretest followed , which was recorded under the direction of Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studio B in Chicago . In addition, the band held gigs with groups such as Mastodon , Cephalic Carnage and Burnt by the Sun from. In 2004 further appearances followed with bands such as Clutch , Mastodon, High on Fire and Zeke . The band also worked on new material while bassist Clayton Ingerson left the band and was replaced by Colin Marston. After that, the band continued rehearsing in Marston's Brooklyn studio . In the same year, the live album Live from the Relapse Contamination Festival 2003 was released , which was limited to 1000 pieces. In 2005 the band wrote their next album and rehearsed in Marston's studio that summer. In the spring the band went on tour with Jucifer . In addition, No Interference was re-released through Translation Loss Records with three bonus live songs. After an autumn tour, the band went to BC Studios in Brooklyn with producer Martin Bisi in early December to record the album Barriers and Passages , which was released in May 2006. In the summer the band went on tour with Behold… the Arctopus , Yakuza and The Dillinger Escape Plan . In the spring of 2007 further appearances followed together with Psyopus and Behold ... the Arctopus. The band also wrote new material and released the split release Fractures with Rothko at the end of August . In the summer of 2008 the band went on tour through the USA and wrote their fifth album. In 2009 the album Psychic Maps followed via Relapse Records, which was followed by Test of Submission via Profound Lore Records in 2012 .

style

Fank Gaspari from Laut.de assigned the music on Pretest to progressive rock and made comparisons with bands like Sonic Youth and Tool . The songs are exhausting to listen to and are instrumental. The guitar riffs were distorted while the bass was tuned down. You can also hear influences from alternative rock , noise and jazz . Greg Prato from Allmusic assigned Psychic Maps to Technical Death Metal and compared the music to Mastodon , only without vocals.
