Assiculus punctatus is a species of fish from the dwarf perch family(Pseudochromidae) that occurs on the coast of northwestern and northern Australia from Shark Bay to the Gulf of Carpentaria .

features

Assiculus punctatus becomes 8 cm long and has a moderately high back body. At the highest point between the beginning of the dorsal fin and the pelvic fins, the body height is 29 to 34% of the standard length . The fish are dark gray to gray or brown to olive in color; the underside of the head and the belly are sometimes reddish brown or bright yellow. There are bright blue dots on the head and torso; bright blue dots or stripes on the dorsal, anal, caudal and pelvic fins. The pectoral fins are transparent.

Most of the soft rays in the dorsal and anal fin are unbranched but segmented. The caudal fin is rounded. Between the occiput and the dorsal fin lie two supraneuralia (predorsal bones), sometimes a third only rudimentarily developed. The sideline is broken. The front section begins behind the gill cover and extends over 33 to 43 (usually 36 to 40) scales with pores. The part lying on the tail stalk comprises 6 to 9 (less often 5 or 10) porous scales. Around the tail stalk there are 17 to 21 scales, usually 19 or 20. The number of vertebrae is 28 or 29 (11 + 17 (18)). The lower lip is not interrupted at the symphysis . The palatal teeth, arranged in a zigzag shape, are relatively large. On the first gill arch there are 13 to 17 gill rakes , 4 to 6 on the upper branch and 9 to 11 on the lower one.

Way of life

Assiculus punctatus lives close to the coast, very hidden in relatively muddy waters with seagrass growth and in reefs made of eroded limestone and occurs in water depths of 30 meters.
