English Dogs is an English crossover band from Grantham that was formed in 1981. The band has had two line-ups since 2012, with the one that has existed since 2012 only being used live.

history

The band was formed in October 1981 and recorded their first demo called Show No Mercy in June 1982 . In its early days, the band consisted of drummer Andrew "Pinch" Pinching, guitarist Jon Murray, singer Peter "Wakey" Wakefield and guitarist Greg. After bassist Mark “Wattie” Watson joined the band, the first appearances followed. The group also went on tour with bands like GBH and One Way System . On their second appearance, the band played with The Destructors and met the guitarist Gizz Butt, who was to join the band in 1984 as a guitarist. By a recommendation from GBH the band got a contract with Clay Records . about which the EP Mad Punx & English Dogs was released in 1983 . In the summer of 1984, the debut Invasion of the Porky Men followed. The album was recorded at Strawberry Studios in March of that year and produced by Mike Stone and Chris "Iceman" Nagle . After some violence in Germany , singer Wakefield left the band and was replaced by Troy McDonald. In addition, with Tracy Abbott, a second guitarist came to the band. This line-up only lasted one demo, which the group was unsatisfied with. Gizz Butt joined the band as guitarist through bassist Watson. After a joint rehearsal, the first appearance followed with Butt together with The Abrasive Wheels . In addition, the EP To the End of the World followed in 1984 via Rot Records , after which Adrian “Adie” Bailey could be heard as the new singer. The EP was recorded at Cargo Studios in Rochdale with producer Ian McNay . Shortly after the recordings, the band began work on the album Forward into Battle , which was released in 1985. In early 1986 the group signed a contract with Under One Flag . This was followed by the EP Metalmorphosis and the album Where Legend Began . Shortly before the album was recorded, guitarist Murray had left the band, so Butt played all the guitar tracks. Shortly after the album was released, drummer Pinching left the line-up. Jamie Martin joined the cast as guitarist, while Spikey Smith played drums. After performing in Birmingham , singer Bailey left the line-up before the group broke up completely.

In 1993 the band reunited and consisted of guitarist Butt, singer Wakefield, drummer Pinching, guitarist Murray and bassist Watson. However, this line-up only lasted five appearances before disintegrating due to personal tension. Then Murray and Watson left the band. At the same time, the band had also signed a contract with the German label Impact Records . After bassist Stuart West joined the band, they performed in Great Britain . In early 1994 the group went to Outrider Studios in Northampton to record the album Bow to None , which was released that same year. After a six-week tour of Germany, singer Wakefield and bassist West left the band. The new singer was Stu Pid, while Swapan “Shop” Nandi played bass. In this line-up, the group recorded the EP What a Wonderful Feeling ... to Be Fucked by Everyone , which included a cover version of the Stiff Little Fingers song Wasted Life . The EP was released in 1995 via Retch Records . After a tour through Scandinavia together with Chaos UK , singer Pid left the band, so that Butt also took over the vocals. The album All the World's a Rage via Impact Records followed in the same year . After that, the band broke up again, with Butt The Prodigy joining. In 1996 the band found themselves in the line-up in which All the World's a Rage was recorded to play one more concert before Butt founded the band Janus Stark . In 2002 Pinching, Wakefield, Murray and Stuart West re-formed the band and played the Holidays in the Sun in the same year and in the USA in 2003 . Butt had already performed there a few months earlier with his band Atwar, where he played some English Dog songs. Promoters had touted the band as English Dogs on some of the gigs in order to gain higher audience numbers. In 2012, the line-up from the album Forward into Battle got together again, so that the band consisted of bassist Craig Christy, drummer Andrew Pinching, guitarists Gizz Butt and Ryan Christy and singer Adrian Bailey. The group went on tour with this line-up along with Toxic Holocaust , Havok and The Casualties .

Andy Pinching, Adie Bailey and Gizz Butt announced that the first album together since Where Legend Began (1986) will be released in 2014 . This is done under the name English Dogs. This happens after the positive response to the USA reunification tour in 2012, on which the band was rounded off by Craig Christy and Ryan Christy. The album will be called The Thing With Two Heads .

style

The band played hardcore punk in their early days, reminiscent of bands like Discharge and Black Flag . From the EP To the End of the World , the influences from Thrash Metal increased. This was mainly due to the addition of guitarist Butt and singer Bailey, who had a rougher, higher pitched voice. The sound of the album Forward into Battle can be compared to metal bands like Voivod , Warfare , Tank and Venom , whereas hardcore-punk influences are hardly audible. The band also sounds like Corrosion of Conformity in places . On Where Legend Began the band had completely turned away from hardcore punk and turned to heavy metal , after playing a mixture of thrash metal and hardcore punk on the EP Metalmorphosis .
