Tank is an English new wave of British heavy metal band from London .

history

Tank was founded in 1980 in the London Borough of Croydon by Algy Ward, Peter Brabbs and Mark Brabbs. The former had previously played with the punk bands The Saints and The Damned . They quickly made a name for themselves as an intensely touring band with bands like Motörhead , Girlschool , Diamond Head and Angel Witch . Motörhead's then guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke produced Tank's first single Don't Walk Away in 1981 , after which the band went on tour again with Motörhead. Her debut album Filth Hounds of Hades , released in 1982, was also produced by Fast Eddie. The successor Power of the Hunter was also released in 1982 . In 1983 Tank signed a recording deal with Music for Nations . They recruited a second guitarist named Michael "Mick" John Tucker and recorded the album This Means War in this constellation .

In 1984 the Brabbs brothers left Tank; Mark Brabbs then played with Dumpy Rusty Nutz and The Blood , and later with Paul Samsons Empire. They were replaced by drummer Graeme Crallan (ex- White Spirit ) and guitarist Cliff Evans (ex-Chicken Snack). The band switched to Roadrunner Records and released Honor & Blood there . Ward also produced the band Warfare's debut album Pure Filth . In the same year Tank went on tour with Metallica and received a response in the supplement to the album Master of Puppets in the acknowledgments and crew.

In January 1985, Gary Taylor replaced Graham Crallan on drums.

After a long period of inactivity, the band released their last album, Tank , in 1987 and disbanded in 1988. Ward became a member of the band Atomgod.

From mid-1993 there were repeated rumors that the band would reunite. Algy was a guest musician on the 1995 released album Warhead of Warhead to hear. After a nine-year hiatus, Tank reunited with Algy Ward, Cliff Evans, Mick Tucker and Steve Hopgood in 1997. They played at Wacken Open Air in 1997 and went on tour in Germany with Hammerfall and Raven in 1997 .

In late 2008, Algy Ward announced that he was leaving the band after 28 years to work on his autobiography . For him, Doogie White took over the role of the singer and Chris Dale, a former member of Bruce Dickinson's band, the bass. Furthermore, Mark Brabbs returned to the drums.

On April 8, 2011 it was announced that Mark Cross had joined the band as the new drummer.

In 2012 the album War Nation was released and the DVD War Machine Live was announced for November 2012 .

But there were also changes in the period that followed. From 2013 the band performed with ZP Theart (ex- Dragonforce ) and in 2014 introduced Bobby Schottkowski (ex- Sodom ) as the new drummer and Barend Courbois ( Blind Guardian ) as the new bass player. In addition, ex-singer Algy Ward released the album Breath To The Pit in 2013 under the name Tank, although only he can be heard as a musician on this album.

Music genre

According to Manfred Kerschke, Tank has a “Motörhead not dissimilar but much more raw style”, and Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic called Motörhead the lion's share of her musical inspiration. On the second album Power of the Hunter , he saw parallels to Kiss and Ritchie Blackmore in places , his colleague Ralph Heibutzki described This Means War as exemplary for Thrash Metal of the 1980s. Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard described a "rumbling, charming musical direction" and Algy Ward's vocals as characteristic of the band, but with the second album without Ward, they show "that a return to the stylistic roots in this line-up is completely out of the question". Doogie White is “a gifted rock singer who has a dreamlike, sure instinct for the perfect hookline and the no less perfect chorus and whose collaboration with the two guitarists Cliff Evans and Mick Tucker works perfectly. 'War Nation' is a tad more melodious than the previous album and is relatively lonely in the genre of commercial heavy rock. ”The guitar playing of the theme song War Nation has been compared to Randy Rhoads and White's vocals to Ronnie James Dio .
