The Saints (English "the saints" ) are an Australian rock band that was founded in 1973 in Brisbane . The band is one of the punk pioneers , but later also took on elements from pop and blues .
Band history
The band was founded in 1973 around singer Chris Bailey, guitarist Ed Kuepper and drummer Ivor Hay initially under the name Kid Galahad and the Eternals , but changed the name to The Saints in 1974 . Influenced by the early The Stooges and MC5 , but also traditional rock 'n' roll , the band began to develop their own punk style.
With bassist Kym Bradshaw they recorded the single (I'm) Stranded in 1976 , which secured them a contract with EMI . The single is considered to be groundbreaking for 1977 punk and was "Single of this and every week" in the British magazine Sounds . In the same year they recorded an LP, which was released in 1977 under the same name as the single. Together with AC / DC they toured Australia.
In 1977 the band moved to England and released the single This Perfect Day , which hit # 34 on the UK charts. In England the band opened for Talking Heads and The Ramones, among others . An own tour did not bring the desired success. The English audience rejected The Saints because they did not correspond to the usual punk clichés. An EP with covers by Tina Turner and Connie Francis was released in October 1977. In 1978 Eternally Yours was released , the music still contained some punk elements, but now R&B elements in the style of The Pretty Things were added.
The third album Prehistoric Sound was a lot darker than its predecessor. The record company forced the band to decouple the Otis Redding cover version Security . The band fell out during an argument over the style of music and broke up as a result of the argument. Ed Kuepper and Ivan Hay returned to Australia and played in local bands there. Bailey, who wanted to go more in the commercial and simpler direction, stayed in England and continued to run The Saints. Hay returned to England for a short time and accompanied the band until 1981. Since then, several albums have been produced with very quickly changing line-ups. In 1984 Ed Kuepper was supposed to get back into the band, but this failed because of the old disputes.
The two albums All Fools Day (1987) and Prodigal Son (1988) were quite successful, and both of Prodigal Son's singles made it into the US Billboard charts.
In 1990, Bailey put the band on hold to focus more on his solo career. He released several albums under his own name.
In the 1990s, Kuepper founded The Aints , which were based on the musical style of the early Saints.
In 1996 the album The Howling was released with a line-up consisting of English and Belgian musicians. In 1999 Bailey took care of the compilation 7799: Big Hits on the Underground . The Saints released other records with a changing line-up.
In 2007 the Saints played a concert at the Queensland Music Festival with their original line-up.
meaning
Bob Geldof called the band, along with the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, the most important band for the development of rock music in the 1970s: "Rock music in the Seventies was changed by three bands - the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and The Saints". The early albums were of particular interest to punk rock from '77, and due to their early release, the Saints are co-founders and pioneers of this music style. The band's later albums divided the fans into two camps: the punk rock fans on the one hand, who were disappointed by the new development, and the new fans, who come more from the pop camp.
In 2001 the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in recognition of their achievements .
