Gottlieb Pot d'Or

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottlieb Pot d'Or (born January 19, 1905 in Bremen , † March 26, 1978 in Schweringen ) was a German artist. The family's ancestors came from Flanders .

Pot d'Or lived and worked in Schweringen ( Lower Saxony ) since 1932 . He was active as an artist in the region and is best known for his large-scale murals and mosaics . In the 1950s and 1960s he was instrumental in the artistic design of schools, savings banks, banks and churches in what was then the county of Hoya .

Study trips took him to Norway, Italy, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, England, France. He received impulses from the greats of modernism, such as Kokoschka , Chagall , Picasso ; He paid special attention to the artists of Expressionism , Cubism and Surrealism .

Pot d'Or's work cannot be clearly assigned to a particular style, as he developed his own language of colors and forms, ranging from representational to abstraction. He expressed his view of things in hand drawings, prints, altar and panel paintings, wall paintings, glass windows, mosaics and sculptures, and private collectors, banks and municipalities have acquired works from him far beyond the district.

Life

The Worpswede artist Heinrich Vogeler encouraged Gottlieb Pot d'Or to study at the Bremen School of Applied Arts (8 semesters). Then he worked for a year in a Bremen printing company. A trip abroad lasting several months took him to Norway, then (1932) a six-month study trip to Italy to Florence and Rome. After his return he received orders for the restoration of churches (carvings on church altars, picture restoration and wall painting) in what was then the county of Hoya. In 1932 the company moved to Schweringen.

During the Second World War , Pot d'Or was used as a soldier in various countries (Soviet Union, Poland, Ruhr area) from 1940 to 1945. The war years of 1941/42 left formative impressions on Belarus. During his time in Soviet captivity , he made many sketches and drawings. After the war he returned to Schweringen and lived and worked there for over three decades. In 1977 - a year before his death - he made his last study trip to Italy.
