Fall of the Idols is a Finnish doom metal band from Tornio that was formed in 2000.

history

The band was founded at the end of 2000 after the breakup of the Adder group by the drummer Jyrki Hakomäki, the bassist Vesa Karppinen and the guitarist Tommi Turunen. In June 2001 a first demo called Per Aspera Ad Aspera was recorded in their rehearsal studio called WaPi, with Karppinen also doing the vocals. The group sent the demo to various locations, thereby increasing their awareness. For example, the band held their first radio interview on September 11, 2001 at a local university radio station. The next demo in 2002 was recorded at various sessions between February and June 2002, with Hakomäki taking over the vocals. The demo was sent again. After the release, the group planned their first appearances, whereupon Rami Moilanen, a longtime friend of the members, joined as another guitarist in November 2002. The line-up was completed by the addition of the singer Panu Paunonen in January 2003. A first self-titled EP was recorded in April 2003 before the sound carrier, which consists of five songs, was released on Friday, February 13th, 2004. The EP was distributed in Australia via PsycheDOOMelic Records and in the USA via Hellride Music . Even so, the band failed to sign a record deal. A couple of gigs were held in the spring of 2004 while another demo was being written. For this purpose, the recordings began in July. In September, Jouni Sihvonen joined as the third guitarist. At the same time, the Belgian label Final Chapter Records released the song Burnt , which originally comes from the EP, on the sampler A Dark World . In November, while work on the demo was continuing, Panu Paunonen left the cast due to the distance between his home and the other members. Hakomäki then took over the vocals for the demo. The recordings were finished in January 2005, after which - almost exactly a year after the EP was released - it was released under the name Agonies Be Thy Children . In February the drummer Hannu Weckman joined the band to support them live. New material was written and rehearsed in the spring, before two appearances took place in the summer and the demo The Pathway was recorded, which was released in October. Shortly after the release, the band signed a record deal with the Swedish label I Hate Records . In December, work began on the debut album. In 2006 the album The Womb of the Earth was released , followed by a second album in 2008 under the name The Séance . In 2010 the compilation Ascension: 2000-2007 was released . For the same year an appearance on the Hammer of Doom was planned, but the participation of the band was canceled. In 2011 the drummer Hannu Weckman died. The following year the third album Solemn Verses was published.

style

Brother Cle from Rock Hard wrote in his review of The Womb of the Earth that it contained epic and melodic Doom Metal. The songs have a dark, mythical, elegant and atmospherically dense character. In a later issue he also reviewed The Séance and found that the band presented themselves "as usual with traditional Doom". When it comes to rocking or experimental songs, however, the group is reminiscent of Reverend Bizarre . Otherwise there is "an earthy, rough and very metallic production, beautiful guitar harmonies [and] a dark-epic atmosphere" on the album. Five years later, Andreas Stappert discovered that Solemn Verses sounds sad, tragic and melancholy as well as beautiful, redeeming and deeply emotional. You can hear classic Doom Metal, but the group still manages to sound independent and unconventional. The singing is variable and expressive and the triple electric guitars have similarities to Anathema , Cathedral and My Dying Bride . In addition, there is a "Nordic gloom on the record, reminiscent of Funeral Doom weighing tons without being Funeral Doom". Laurent Lignon from doom-metal.com also reviewed the album and found that the material is slower than the previous one, so that it almost borders on Funeral Doom. The group is moving away from classic Doom Metal, but you can still clearly see their roots. Occasionally, similarities with Skepticism , Candlemass and early Godsend can be seen .
