40 Watt Sun is an English doom metal band from London that was founded in 2009.

history

The trio was formed in 2009 by guitarist and singer Patrick Walker, who was previously active with Blistering Anal Sun and Warning , drummer Christian Leitch, who was previously guitarist for The River and drummer for Warning, and bassist William Spong, who had previously appeared more as a producer and sound engineer. The band made their first appearance on December 20 of the same year at the Scream Club in London together with Wake, who is also from this city. In April 2010 the band took part in the Doom Shall Rise . Towards the end of the year, the debut album The Inside Room was recorded within three days and released in 2011 via Cyclone Empire . The recordings for this had taken place in London's The Library Studio , the band had produced these five songs and Spong had taken over the recording and mixing. In 2012 and 2014 the group took part in the Roadburn Festival . In 2015 the band played on the Hammer of Doom . This was followed by the second album, Wider Than the Sky, in 2016, which was recorded in the UK's Giant Wafer Studios within five days .

style

Thom Jurek from Allmusic assigned the band to Doom Metal, with the group particularly focusing on lower- pitched and distorted electric guitars, full-sounding tom toms and large drums , a low speed as well as introspective and poetic texts that are performed with a natural and thoughtful sounding vocals would. Mandy Malon from Rock Hard stated that Wider Than the Sky is “at least as dreamy and bittersweet as its predecessor, but also a bit more rocky , maybe even more progressive and less heavy”. 40 Watt Sun is very different from Warning, as this band now sounds more hopeful and, especially on the second album, they deal with slight ambient influences. An issue earlier, Boris Kaiser had noted in his Wider-Than-the-Sky review that the music is not really Doom Metal, which is even more noticeable than the debut album, but rather a downtempo version of Singer -Songwriter -Music. The group avoids slipping into independent or folk areas. Overall, the music can best be compared with early Sophia or the gentler The God Machine .
