Hail of Bullets was a Dutch death metal band that was active from 2006 to 2017.
history
Hail of Bullets was founded at the end of 2006 by Martin van Drunen ( Asphyx ; Ex- Pestilence , Bolt Thrower ), Ed Warby ( Gorefest ), Paul Baayens (Asphyx), Theo van Eekelen and Stephan Gebédi (both Thanatos ). The idea for this arose in a bar in Amersfoort, where the five later members became aware of their common musical interests during a party and immediately decided to start a new death metal project.
The project turned out to be quite difficult at the beginning, as all five musicians are also active in other bands , especially Ed Warby, who in addition to his work as a drummer at Gorefest also participates in numerous studio projects. Despite all the difficulties, enough material was soon collected for a full-length album. After the band had agreed on a name, the recording work began in July 2007 for a promo CD , which contained four tracks. The renowned label Metal Blade Records quickly became aware of the band and signed the group.
On May 16, 2008, the debut album called … Of Frost and War was finally released. In terms of content, it deals with the German-Soviet war , especially with the Russian campaign in 1941 . All songs on this album are arranged in chronological order and reflect the course of the campaign.
The EP Warsaw Rising followed on July 17, 2009 , which deals with the Warsaw Uprising and contains two new songs, a cover version of “Destroyer” ( Twisted Sister ) and three live songs.
The second album, On Divine Winds , was released on October 8, 2010 and deals with events of the Pacific War between the United States and Japan.
On October 28, 2013 the band released their third album III - The Rommel Chronicles , which traces the military career of Erwin Rommel in the First and Second World Wars .
In November 2015 the band announced that they had parted ways with Martin van Drunen due to personal differences. All upcoming tour dates have been canceled. However, it will continue with a new front man. On March 13, 2017, a notice of the breakup was posted on the band's website .
style
Thematically, Hail of Bullets dedicate their albums and EP to the Second World War in a simple language . According to singer Martin van Drunen, this is a coincidence from the musical direction of the songs and from his interest in the subject, but it is not a conscious decision of the band. It cannot be ruled out that the band will deal with other topics on the following albums.
Musically, the band is clearly oriented towards classic death metal . Complex reef structures and solos are almost completely dispensed with. The songs are mostly played slowly to medium-fast to give the songs more intensity. The latter in particular has parallels to the music of Bolt Thrower .
