Thanatos is a Dutch thrash and death metal band from Rotterdam that was founded in 1984, split up in 1992 and reunited in 1999. They are one of the oldest Dutch extreme metal bands.

history

Thanatos was founded in 1984 by guitarist and singer Stephan Gebédi, guitarist Remco De Maaijer and drummer Marcel Van Arnhem. After a few demos and line-up changes, they recorded their debut album Emerging from the Netherworlds ( Shark Records ) in 1990 . The band now consisted of singer and guitarist Gebédi, drummer Remo Van Arnhem, guitarist Erwin De Brouwer and bassist Ed Boeser. The next album Realm of Ecstasy followed in 1992 and was also released through Shark Records. Thanatos performed with other groups such as Kreator , Sepultura , Death , Napalm Death , Bolt Thrower , Autopsy and Death Angel . It dissolved for the time being in the same year.

In 1999, Stephan Gebédi revived Thanatos. The new members were besides Gebédi bassist Theo van Eekelen, drummer Aad Kloosterwaard and guitarist Paul Baayens. All new members have already played with other bands such as Sinister , Houwitser and Cremation . The third album Angelic Encounters was released in 2000 on Hammerheart Records . This was followed by appearances with Morbid Angel , Vader , Dying Fetus , Exhumed , Cryptopsy , Krisiun , Destruction and Necrophagia .

In 2002, the band recorded the EP Beyond Terror to get label attention. The EP was released through Baphomet Records . The band signed a contract with the Greek label Black Lotus Records in 2004 . The album Undead.Unholy.Divine. was published the following year. During the recording of the follow-up album Justified Genocide , however, Black Lotus Records went bankrupt.

In 2009 Thanatos signed a contract with the Dutch label Deity Down Records , where Justified Genocide was finally released. The album was recorded in the Excess Studio in Rotterdam and mastered in the Unisound Studio by Dan Swanö ( Edge of Sanity , Bloodbath , Moontower ).

In December 2009, drummer Yuri Rinkel was replaced by Marco de Groot (Houwitser, ex- Altar , ex- Blind Justice ). Rinkel, who in the meantime also played with Funeral Winds , Lier in Wait, Inferi, Death Sentence and Liar of Golgotha, is now the drummer of the originally Israeli band Melechesh .

style

With a few exceptions, the tempo of the songs is consistently high. The songs have an aggressive sound and are described as a mixture of pieces by the band Kreator and early works by the bands Slayer and Bolt Thrower .

At the beginning, the musicians stated that they were not a satanist band, as numerous other musicians claimed to be satanists. Several years later, one of the musicians were in Slayer - Fanzine on, however, the band had then already a strong interest in the occult , had he himself does not worship Satan , but believes in his own way in the forces of good and evil . The former guitarist is in personal contact with Anton Szandor LaVey . In their texts, the band deals with topics such as religious fanaticism , the alleged connections between occultism and National Socialism and historical figures such as Saddam Hussein , Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler . Due to the lyrical themes on the album Justified Genocide , the band distanced themselves from possible allegations of being a National Socialist band.
