Ofermod ( ang . Cockiness ') is a Black - / death metal band from Norrköping , Sweden .

history

The band was founded in 1996 by Michayah Belfagor, who then discontinued his old band Nefandus . In January 1998, the band, now consisting of him and singer Nebiros, recorded the 7 "EP Mystérion tés anomias ( Greek μυστήριον τῆς άνομίας, ' Mysterium of Lawlessness ') in the Necromorbus studio , which was published via Pounding Metal Productions. The successor was originally the debut album Mystery of Iniquity planned but never released. In 2000 Belfagor withdrew from his musical activities to devote himself fully to his occult studies and practices.

In 2003 Belfagor resumed his activities as a guitarist while imprisoned and began composing again. He was released in spring 2004 and reanimated Ofermod with the original singer Leviathan Nebiros and the new drummer Shiva in summer 2004. After another prison sentence, Belfagor came into contact with Atum von Dödfödd and through him with Tehôm, and was thus able to complete the line-up. In December 2004, the band recorded two songs in the Necromorbus studio, which appeared on the 2005 EP re-release. According to Belfagor, Atum and Tehôm were not involved in the recordings, contrary to the information on the EP and the earlier Ofermod page. Atum worked among others with Emit, later converted to Catholicism and plays in the band Reverorum ib Malacht.

For December 2005, the band announced that they would record their debut album Pentagrammaton in the Necromorbus studio , with singer Leviathan Nebiros sharing the vocals with Moloch; this is a spiritual brother and is known by a different name in the Spanish black / death metal underground. The recordings for the Pentagrammaton album initially remained unpublished. Ofermod's debut album was released in 2008 under the title Tiamtü and was again recorded exclusively by Belfagor and Nebiros; Belfagor from Ofermod announced, however, that Moloch will continue to work with his band and take over the vocals at concerts should Nebiros be prevented. Moloch wrote half of the text of the text on Eu Angélion ; in the booklet of the album he is named as "frater Nasko of Teitanblood " . Finally, the release of Pentagrammaton was announced for June 2020 .

background

The band invokes the powers of Sitra Achra (סטרא אחרא). Belfagor writes the lyrics in connection with meditation or after out of body experiences , in which he approaches the forces he is writing about, and composes in semi- trance , the compositions mainly based on his guitar work. The sounds he encounters during astral journeys into the realm of the forces of chaos are, according to Belfagor, very difficult to duplicate, which is why he tries to capture the feeling and the atmosphere of these sounds and a tonal form of his astral visions in his compositions. Ofermod's style is considered independent, "not easily accessible" and an inspiration for other Swedish bands like Watain and Ondskapt . Ofermod initially played raw Black Metal, reminiscent of Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas , but later also took on Death Metal influences in the style of Morbid Angel . On the second album Thaumiel , Doom Metal elements and parallels to Samael's early work can be heard.

The band itself initially referred to their music as "Orthodox Black Metal". She describes the recordings for the re-release of the EP, however, as "Orthodox Death Metal" because she no longer used the word Satan , but wanted to leave his most sacred essence unnamed, which existed before the cosmos. Because of his occult experiences, Belfagor came to this point of view before the other members, while in 2004 they were still religious devil worshipers . The band refers in particular to the Kabbalah and stands for chaos as the dark opposite side to creation , which they see as the real evil . The materialization of existence must and will be reversed again, since this is a curse that life has taken upon itself through its manifestation. The band uses terms such as evil but also for their own perception from a cosmic perspective.

Presumably because of earlier controversial statements Belfagor, his other band Nefandus was brought close to neo-Nazism . However, he himself emphasizes that he has friends of all skin colors and therefore regards these claims as insulting. However, he also had contacts with neo-Nazis and other racists , but not because of their political views; with them he shares an interest in martial arts and Nordic mythology .
