Possession is a Belgian black and death metal band that was formed in 2012.

history

The band was founded in late 2012. The first rehearsals took place weekly on Saturdays in the basement of the then singer Mestema in the countryside outside of Brussels . However, as the neighbors complained about the volume, the band soon moved to another rehearsal room. However, this happened to the band seven to eight times before they found a suitable room in the center of Brussels. In the meantime a first demo called His Best Deceit (2013) and the EPs Anneliese (2013) and 1585-1646 (2015) have been written. In the final rehearsal room, the band wrote their debut album Exorkizein , which was released in 2017.

style

In her review for 1585-1646 , Mandy Malon of Rock Hard wrote that the EP was about a witch who was said to have lived in France from 1585 to 1646 . The band play wild, brutal and evil Black and Death Metal, which has “an unrestrained, incredibly threatening atmosphere”. Two years later, Malon reviewed Exorkizein and found that, after having dealt with the case of Anneliese Michel on the 2014 EP , the topic of exorcism was dealt with again . Musically it is about unoriginal “Black / Death rubble with exorcism theatricality”, although there is a lack of malice, energy and atmosphere. Two editions later, Malon commented again on Exorkizein and revealed that it is a concept album that Gabriele Amorth thematized. In an interview with her, the band stated that their goal is to tell stories that should make it clear that evil cannot be defeated. In addition, the band gives to understand that they are fascinated by Satanism and exorcism. Björn Backes from Powermetal.de also discussed the album and assigned it to Black and Death Metal, but also noted influences from Thrash Metal . Overall, the album consists of "dirty grooves and malicious frenzy". Similarities to Carpathian Forest and Darkthrone can be heard in the songs .
