Devourment is an American death metal band from Texas, founded in 1995 . It was founded by Brad Fincher (drums), Wayne Knupp (vocals) and Braxton Henry (guitar) and emerged from the previous band Necrocide. Devourment are considered the pioneers of Slam Death Metal, a subgenre of Death Metal, which is mainly characterized by dominant grooves , extreme breakdowns (slams), heavily tuned instruments and pig squeals / grunts in the death metal scene .

history

After several changes within the band, a relatively stable line-up was created consisting of Brad Fincher (drums), Wayne Knupp (vocals), Brain (guitar), Kevin Clark (guitar) and Mike Majewski (bass). In 1997 the demo Impaled was finally released under the label Corpsegristle Records , consisting of three songs ( Choking on Bile , Festering Vomitous Mass , Shroud of Encryption ). Although the sound was not particularly polished and the instrumental performances were not great, the demo already showed the potential behind the name Devourment. Accordingly, a considerable local fan base was already gathering around devourment. After internal differences, Wayne Knupp temporarily left the band and the no less talented Ruben Rosas took the microphone in hand.

In 1999 the release of the first album Molesting the Decapitated (8 songs) on the American label United Guttural Records marked the turning point in the history of Devourments. The album was characterized above all by an oppressive sound, Rosas' ultra-low vocals as well as furious breakdowns and constantly varying, "rolling" rhythms. Although the term Slam Death Metal haunted the scene before, Devourments Molesting the Decapitated gave it the appropriate face. Practically "overnight" they gained a previously unthinkable fame within Death Metal, which was also due to the fact that Devourment played many gigs within Texas as well as at the larger Death Metal festivals in the USA (e.g. Ohio Death Fest, Maryland Death Fest).

The criminal Ruben Rosas was arrested out of the blue (violation of the probation conditions). This happened the same night Molesting the Decapitated came out. Although the band members only decided to go their separate ways after this shock, Devourment restructured without Brain and Rosas, but with Wayne Knupp, who took over the vocals again. The fans are the main reason for this decision here. Together they recorded the song Babykiller and mixed it together with the demo Impaled and Molesting the Decapitated 2004 to a new release: 1.3.8 . The existing combo did not have any more appearances after Ruben Rosas' imprisonment and Devourment was sidelined for the time being, although Ruben Rosas was released after two and a half years and tried to reanimate the band. The song Kill That Fucking Bitch , which has meanwhile been hated by devourment members and largely ignored in the discography, originated from this time . It was never recorded in a studio.

After several months, Ruben, Wayne and Mike gave each other a jolt and decided to revive Devourment and record a new record, Butcher the Weak . Although Wayne will still be the support singer on the LP according to the band, he is no longer an official band member. Instead of Brad Fincher, the new Eric Park now operates the drums and the newly added Chris Andrews the bass. The current line-up is Mike Majewski (vocals), Ruben Rosas (guitar), Eric Park (drums) and Chris Andrews (bass).

Since 2006 the band has been under contract with the undergound label Brutal Bands . The album Butcher the Weak , released in 2005, was re-recorded there and re-released with a greatly improved sound and a revised cover.

On September 15, 2007 the original singer Wayne Knupp died of organ failure, which can be traced back to alcohol abuse.

style

Particularly characteristic of Devourment are the extremely oppressive sound, the sluggish, groovy rhythms and the gargle-like growls by Wayne Knupp (during demo times), Ruben Rosas (vocals for Molesting the Decapitated , now back-up vocals) and currently Mike Majewski. The overall arrangement is also very dark and bass-heavy. Solos like for example suffocation are completely dispensed with, instead a more grindcore-like game comes to the fore next to the breakdowns and grooves. Lyrical attempts to improve the world are dispensed with, the band is returning to the roots of Death Metal and exclusively indulging in slaughter, murder and violence fantasies:

Here I come, they call me, a beast like none before, I suck the abscess of dead infants, I want some more, I am Babykiller, I kill pregnant sluts and whores .
