Pig Squeals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pig squeals ( engl . For Schweinegequieke ) are in the grind core , Death Core and in Slam Deathmetal used guttural singing technique . They can be produced by both Inhales and Exhales .

history

The pig-squeal vocal technique was developed by various grindcore and death metal bands such as Cryptopsy in the mid-1990s . To date, pig squeals are used almost exclusively in these genres and their subgenres.

use

Pig squeals in deathcore, in contrast to other techniques, are usually not used continuously, but represent a kind of accentuation and mostly sound like the fictional word "Bree" (which has a similar sound to the name of the soft cheese Brie ; however, the r is different than in this one, pronounced in English). Simple pig squeals are usually used during the breakdowns typical of the genre , without making it sound lower or higher. However, some deathcore bands use this vocal technique almost exclusively. Bands known for making excessive use of pig squeals include Waking the Cadaver , Salt the Wound , Dr. Acula , We Butter the Bread with Butter and Despised Icon . The English band Annotations of an Autopsy is known for their particularly high pig squeals.

In Slam Death Metal or in Goregrind, however, Pig Squeals are used a lot more, where they are mostly used for vocals besides the growl, as it sounds particularly dehumanized and incomprehensible. Some bands additionally distort their squeals with a pitch shifter to shift it a few octaves down or up to make them appear even more strange (e.g. the Goregrind band Jig-Ai from Prague). Other bands that exclusively pigsqueal include Devourment , Kraanium and Katalepsy.

Pig squeals, like the other guttural singing techniques, can be formed by inhaling and exhaling. While the squeal can be made quieter by inhaling, but deeper or higher, the exhale pig squeal (exhaling) is louder and usually stands out with particularly strong "bubbling", which is hardly possible with inhales.

A good comparison of the differences between In- and Exhale Pig Squeals can be seen between the bands Devourment (Inhale) and Cemetery Rapist (Exhale).

Health risks

Incorrect execution of pig squeals or poor basic conditions, such as respiratory diseases , pose health risks. However, these are limited to the larynx area . In addition to temporary “scratching” in the larynx, in very rare cases long-term damage to the voice can occur. Therefore, it is best to learn the technique before using it through specialized singing lessons.
