Urfaust (named after Goethe's Urfaust ) was initially created as an ambient project by IX. This recorded the demo of the grandfather legends . Later VRDRBR (pronounced: Verderber), who was already a guest musician for The Devil's Blood , joined and in 2004 the GoatowaRex label released their debut Geist ist Teufel . In 2005, Traitorous, Wretched Spirit followed . In the following years more EPs and splits appeared . The band is currently under contract with the label Ván Records of ex- Nagelfar member Sven Dinninghoff.

On the albums Urfaust played raw and simple Black Metal , which, however, does not have the usual screams . IX uses a kind of operatic singing that varies from clear singing to screams reminiscent of Burzum . The guitar is extremely distorted and often has strong effects. In contrast to this is the dry, clear drums. Some pieces are only played with classical instruments such as the violin , double bass , timpani and trumpets . The reviews were mostly positive. The music is described as "hard to digest", "foggy and oppressive". Three Rituals Beyond the Cosmos contains strong influences from Drone Doom . The music on this EP has been compared to the black metal / death industrial band Abruptum . The EP Einsiedler is a bit more melodic, but at a similarly slow pace. There are influences of post-rock as well as a keyboard solo lasting several minutes. The band's influences are in black metal, but also in medieval music , old worship songs and shōmyō singing. Textual inspirations include Goethe's Faust and Friedrich Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra .
The names of the songs are in demanding but often faulty German: Extract of all deadly his strengths , the half-dead poet's sham-existence . The band's lyrics are neither understandable nor known, and the question is often raised whether any exist.
“Sounds like 'the text' doesn't contain a single word. Singer IX is articulated primarily in plaintive screams with an ornithological background [...] and a morbid singsong that sometimes exudes the solemn theatrics of a dying opera hero, sometimes sounds like a drunken sailor who wavers and vacillates between suppressed joie de vivre and endless longing. "
From a statement by the band, however, it can be concluded that the voice is used as an instrument, but that there are also texts. The booklet of the 2010 album Der Freiwillige Bettler contains texts written in Dutch.
