Black Anvil is an American extreme metal band from New York City , New York that was formed in 2007.

history

The band was formed in 2007 and consisted of bassist and singer Paul Delaney, guitarist and singer Gary Bennett and drummer and singer Raeph Glicken. The name came from Bennett, who borrowed the name from a Black Sabbath reference and a song by Judas Priest . After the band had signed a contract with Monumentum Records , the debut album Time Insults the Mind was released in October 2008 . The album had been recorded in a friend's recording studio in Queens over the weekend . After the release, appearances followed all over New York. In June 2009 the band signed a record deal with Relapse Records . In January 2010 the band went to the recording studio of Mark Mendoza from Twisted Sister with producer George Fullan . In September the second album was released under the name Triumvirate . In the fall, the debut album was also re-released via Relapse Records. In March Black Anvil performed at the Scion Rock Fest in Ohio with Voivod , Black Tusk and Brutal Truth . In addition, it went on a tour through the USA, but the tour ended with two appearances in Canada . Another US tour with Behemoth , Watain and Withered . In August 2010, however, it was announced that the Behemoth member Adam Michał "Nergal" Darski was ill, which is why the band dropped out of the tour. That same month Black Anvil played at the Hostile City Deathfest in Philadelphia . From November 6th to December 4th, 2010 the band went on tour with Watain and Goatwhore . In May and June 2011 they went on a tour together with Aura Noir , EyeHateGod and Marduk . In May 2012 they went on another tour with Watai. In the autumn of the same year the guitarist Sos joined the cast as the fourth member. On December 21, 2012, the group played with Evoken and Saint Vitus in Brooklyn . In February 2013 the band played at Winter's Wake in Pittsburgh . In 2014, Relapse Records released the third album Hail Death , which was recorded by Jawbox under the direction of J. Robbins .

style

The band biography on metalstorm.net states that the band has groups like Poison Idea , Celtic Frost , Black Sabbath, Metallica , Agnostic Front , Possessed , Sodom , Kreator , Carnivore , Venom , Twisted Sister, Mercyful Fate , Darkthrone , Bad Brains and Black Flag indicated as their influences. In the band biography on relapse.com Paul Delaney stated that he was influenced for Hail Death by the Kiss album Destroyer and the Metallica album Master of Puppets . The band describes itself as a black metal band, although the traditional reference to Satanism is missing. Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic also thought that the band sounds like Scandinavian Black Metal. Thomas Strater from Metal Hammer also stated that the group played Nordic Black Metal on Hail Death , which was, however, more varied than usual and enriched by influences from Doom Metal and Heavy Metal . In an interview with Strater, Delaney stated that the album is about death. Christian Kruse from Metal Hammer felt reminded of the Celtic Frost song Dethroned Emperor while listening to Time Insults the Mind . He also assigned the album to Black Metal. You can hear influences from groups like Celtic Frost, Venom and Possessed on the album. On the sound carrier there are "appropriately produced killer riffs , harsh heaviness , unpretentious vocals - and thankfully only the bare minimum of image-enhancing bugs". That would be the same as hardcore punk , although members of Black Anvil had previously worked for the hardcore punk band Kill Your Idols . Otherwise the album would have nothing in common with hardcore punk. Patrick Schmidt from Rock Hard stated that the first two albums can be assigned to Black Metal. On the third album, however, in addition to black metal, thrash metal , doom metal, hardcore punk and traditional metal were processed. In an interview with Schmidt, Delaney also stated that the production technology for Hail Death was based on Destroyer and Master of Puppets .
