Evoken is a funeral doom band formed in Lyndhurst , New Jersey in 1992 .

history

Nick Orlando formed the band in 1992 under the name Funereus. After Orlando had rehearsed for a while with various local musicians, Phil Wilson, Rob Robichaud and Vince Verkay formed a first working band constellation for the members in June of the same year. The following month the group recorded their first demo tape . At the beginning of 1993 the band changed their name to Asmodeus. Wilson and Robichaud left the band again the following year, after which Orlando and Verkay briefly considered breaking up the group completely. Despite these considerations, both played new material together and placed advertisements looking for new musicians. In August 1994, John Paradiso and Bill Manley responded to such a search advertisement in a newspaper and joined the band. The group saw this step as a new beginning and changed the name, this time based on a song by the funeral doom pioneers Thergothon , to Evoken. In the same year the band recorded the second demo tape Shades of Night Descending . The demo was well received and re-released in 1996 by the French label Adipocere Records . In the meantime, the group sought to expand their sound, so that Dario Derna joined in 1995 as a keyboardist. In this constellation, the group recorded the third demo tape in 1996 for the first time in a professional studio in order to introduce themselves to different record companies. Following the recordings, the band urged Manley to leave the band and replaced him with Steve Moran. With their fourth demo tape, recorded in 1997, Evoken was able to arouse the interest of a label for the first time and found its first contractual partner in Elegy Records . The label financed the recording of the debut album Embrace the Emptiness in 1998. In the following years Evoken participated in two tribute samplers on the label Dwell Records , for Iron Maiden with Strange World and for Black Sabbath with Snowblind . In addition, the group toured intensively after their album recordings. After Evoken had recorded their second studio album Quietus for avant-garde music in 2001 , with which they signed a permanent contract, Derna left the band to move back to his hometown. It was not until the winter of 2003, in preparation for their first European tour, that the group hired Denny Hahn to replace Derna. After the tour and shortly before the recording of the third studio album, Moran left the group. Without hiring a new bass player, the group played the third album Antithesis of Light , on which Paradiso played the bass. It was not until 2006 that a new bass player was found in Craig Pillard, the sole member of Methadrone . However, Hahn left the group shortly afterwards due to insurmountable differences with the rest of the band. With the Swedish label I Hate Records , Evoken found a new contract partner in 2007, for whom the group then recorded the album A Caress of the Void . Pillard left the group after the recordings and was replaced by Dave Wagner and founding member Nick Orlando also left the band in 2010 after recording the split album with Beneath the Frozen Soil for private reasons, so that only Vince of the first stable line-up of the band Verkay stayed. Orlando was replaced as guitarist by Chris Molinari and in the new line-up, the group recorded the album Atra Mors for Profound Lore Records in 2012 .

style

The music of Evoken is assigned to the Funeral Doom . The group's style is mostly compared to the early works of My Dying Bride as well as the work of Thergothon. The vocals are mainly described as aggressive growling , from which, however, passages in the clear vocals stand out. The riffing is considered monotonous and the atmosphere is decisive, since "the eternal repetition of the tough guitar walls [...] creates a seemingly endless tension." The music is primarily slow, but is loosened up by eruptive eruptions through to blast beats and acoustic phases . Cellists are often involved in the sound of the group as guest musicians .
