Black Tusk is an American sludge band from Savannah , Georgia .

history

The band was formed in 2005 after Andrew Fidlers (guitar, vocals) and Jonathan Athons (bass, vocals) crustcore band and James Mays (drums, vocals) street punk band broke up. Andrew and Jonathan met James and for the next few weeks they jammed and so after a few months of work the EP When Kingdoms Fall was born , which was released under the label Wrecked Signal . Two years later the band released their first album The Fallen Kingdom , followed a year later by Passage Through Purgatory . In 2009 Black Tusk recorded a few split albums with bands like ASG , The Holy Mountain and Fight Amp before they signed up with Relapse Records in November .

Bass player Jonathan Athon and his girlfriend had a serious motorcycle accident on November 7, 2014. He suffered irreparable brain damage and fell into a coma. On November 9, he died of the consequences at the age of 32.

style

Black Tusk describe their music themselves as "Swamp Metal". Allmusic describes them as "the gloomy, dirtiest sludge from Savannah since Kylesa" . The term is a nod to the climate in the area and the sound of their music. The band has admitted their roots in punk , but prefers not to mention any bands that influenced them.

Black Tusk is often associated with the bands Baroness and Kylesa because they all come from Savannah and are part of the sludge genre. In addition, Baroness' guitarist and singer John Dyer Baizley is responsible for designing Black Tusk's releases.
