Joyless is a Norwegian band.

Band history

Joyless was founded in 1996 by Rune Vedaa and Olav Berland as a side project, which should be more experimental than their other band Forgotten Woods and should not be based exclusively on Black Metal . Influences are all styles the musicians like, including depressive black metal , folk , shoegazing, and proto and post punk artists such as The Velvet Underground , The Stooges , Joy Division , early The Cure and the Cocteau Twins . Ida Helleboe's vocals are compared with those of Kate Bush and Dolores O'Riordan by No Colors Records , which has released several of the band's records , and the style is described as "misanthropic pop ". A personal style is more important than with Forgotten Woods, the band also wants to avoid copying themselves. The two groups that existed at the same time are considered "the first [...] when it came to combining that famous laid-back melancholy of the VELVET UNDERGROUND with Black Metal", and thus also as pioneers of the style of bands such as Lifelover and Woods of Infinity.

Nevertheless, there were pieces composed for Forgotten Woods on their debut Unlimited Hate , which " celebrated a superficially fucked up, punky Black Metal that was so typical for them". At the same time, there are atypical influences here, so that the webzine Myrrthronth credits the band with "allowing their own roots and thus the purest Black Metal to develop en masse."

“Somehow I have the feeling that Black Metal would not have surrendered to glitz and glamor , but lived unfaithfulness in reflection of itself, as Joyless did, he still had this former emotion of the true and the ideology of the original with him today. "

Only then did Joyless develop “completely away from metal and in a way that is final.” The style on her album Wisdom & Arrogance (2000) can be classified as “punk country rock”; the re-publication of their material from previous years on the sound carrier Wild Signs of The Endtime was “according to the band a final look back at what this group has been associated with so far”. The webzine Chronicles of Chaos describes Joyless as " alternative rock alter ego " by Forgotten Woods. Despite the change in style, the band continued to release on black metal labels such as No Colors Records and Suicide Services and on shared sound carriers with such bands.

In 2011 her third album Without Support was released on the Aachen label Ván Records .
