Thulcandra is a Munich-based melodic death and black metal band that was founded in 2003.

history

The band was founded in 2003 by the singer and guitarist Steffen Kummerer and the guitarist Jürgen Zintz. Both of them knew each other beforehand, because they had worked together at Obscura and had written songs together that hadn't suited Obscura, which is why they had decided to found Thulcandra. The band was named after the Darkthrone demo of the same name . In 2004 she recorded a first demo. Then the band began, reinforced by the drummer Jonas Baumgartl, with the work on the debut album, which was stopped by Zintz's suicide . Work only resumed in 2008 after Kummerer stumbled upon an old demo while moving. In 2009 a permanent line-up had formed, with bassist Tobias and his brother, guitarist Sebastian Ludwig, as well as session drummer Matthias “Seraph” Landes. The album was released in 2010 under the name Fallen Angel's Dominion . This includes a cover version of the Dissection song The Somberlain . A year later, the second album followed, Under a Frozen Sun , which was produced by V. Santura at Woodshed Studios and mastered by Kristian "Necrolord" Wåhlin . The album contains, among other things, a cover of Unanimated -Liedes Life Demise . Peter Huss von Shining can be heard as a guest musician on the album . The next album, Ascension Lost , was released in 2015 . In 2020 Thulcandra's bassist Christian Kratzer, who had only been a member of the band since 2019, died.

style

According to the band biography on thetruethulcandra.com , the band was initially influenced by groups like Dissection, Sacramentum and Unanimated. For the second album they tried harder to incorporate Swedish black and death metal from the 1990s. In an interview with Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , Stefan Kummerer named Dissection and Unanimated as well as the Eucharist as an influence. In a later interview with Petra Schurer from the same magazine, Kummerer cited an influence from Cynic . In his review of Fallen Angel's Dominion , Robert Müller wrote that the first two Dissection albums in particular must have been a major influence. The music is vicious, melodic and a mixture of Swedish black and death metal from the 1990s. He compared the music to that of Dissection, Unanimated, and Necrophobic . Melanie Aschenbrenner from Metal Hammer also assigned the band to Black and Death Metal in her review of Under a Frozen Sun. The production is sometimes too clinical, sometimes too deliberately nostalgic. Martin Wickler of the same magazine assigned the band in his review of Ascension Lost to Melodic Death Metal, which included "polyphonic melodies, acoustic guitars [and] Nödtveidt- like vocals". In an interview with Rock Hard's Patrick Schmidt , Kummerer stated that Thulcandra was founded to emulate the style of Swedish black and death metal bands of the 1990s such as Dissection, Unanimated, Eucharist and Dawn . Boris Kaiser had already reviewed the album Ascension Lost one issue before and described the music as a melodic mixture of death and black metal. In addition to the usual comparisons with Dissection and Sacramentum, he also gave Mörk Gryning . The album seems a bit more melodic than its predecessor. The group usually plays at a high technical level.
