Protector (en. 'Protector') is a German thrash metal band that was founded in 1986 in Wolfsburg . Since the band was re-established in 2011, the band's headquarters have been in Stockholm and Uddevalla ( Sweden ).

Band history

Protector was founded in 1986 by Michael Hasse († 1994), "Hansi" Müller and Michael Schnabel. In contrast to bands like Kreator , Sodom and Destruction , Protector only attracted attention throughout Germany within the metal scene . The band failed to achieve international success until the end, while some successes could be achieved within Germany.

After recording the demo Protector of Death , Protector got a record deal with Atom H in 1987 . In the same year the mini LP Misanthropy was released , which received very good reviews in relevant specialist magazines. The second long player Golem was sold around 20,000 times, according to the record company. This was followed by major appearances, including a tour with the US metallers Wehrmacht . Protector barely changed his style and received bad reviews from the specialist press in 1989 after the release of the album Urm the Mad . The fan base grew quickly through numerous appearances with Kreator, Sodom, Destruction and other bands. However, the band had the problem that the then singer Martin Missy could not always perform live for professional reasons, so Protector fell back on Oliver Wiebel, whose singing style was clearly different from Missy's.

Martin Missy then left the band and has now been completely replaced by Oliver Wiebel. He went to the studio to record the album Leviathan's Desire . The music was now more than death metal and was received differently by the press. The band went on a big tour with Napalm Death and Entombed .

In 1991 the album A Shedding of Skin was released , for which Harris Johns, one of the most famous metal producers, could be won. Mille Petrozza from Kreator was supposed to produce the album as well, but there were overlapping dates. The album received 8 out of 10 points from Rock Hard magazine . This was followed in spring 1992 by a tour with DVC and No Return , which was canceled after only two gigs due to health problems by drummer Hasse. Drummer Michael Hasse was replaced by Marco Pape. At this time further personnel changes took place, founder "Hansi" Müller had left the band before A Shedding of Skin , Oliver Wiebel took over the guitar part and Eduard Belichmeier (in the band since 1987) was replaced by Matthias "Matze" Grün on bass.

In 1993 Protector's last long player was released. The Heritage had a completely different style based on a mixture of Death Metal and Doom Metal , something that Protector had not heard before.

In the spring of 1994 Protector wanted to go on a European tour with the French Massacra and Babylon Sad . Shortly before the tour started, however, Protector was replaced by label colleagues Accuser . Many viewers were only surprised at the appearance, as the organizers sometimes had no information about the serious change. At the concert on April 25, 1994 in the Andernach Youth Center , there were even fights. The trade magazines did not give a reason for this change after the tour.

Protector broke up and only Marco Pape tried to keep the band alive with various musicians. In 2000 the demo ressurrected was published.

Since 2006 Martin Missy, who now lives in Sweden , has been on the road with the cover band Martin Missy and the Protectors. In 2011 Martin Missy brought Protector back to life together with his bandmates from The Protectors. They recorded a demo ( The Return of Thrash and Madness ) together, which they presented on October 8, 2011 at the Way of Darkness Festival in Lichtenfels .

One of Protector's best-known titles is Cain & Abel, about the two brothers from the Bible. Most of the band's songs were about politics or actions from the Bible.

In September 2013 the first album in 20 years with the title "Reanimated Homunculus" was released, which was produced by Tomas Skogsberg in the Sunlight Studios in Stockholm . The vinyl editions available from this were partly sold out before the release.

Protector were again in the Sunlight Studios at the beginning of May 2015 to record the new long player, which was released on February 26, 2016. The album "Cursed & Coronated" received good to very good reviews in all print and online reviews.

Protector recorded a long player in the studio in October 2018. The producer was Harris Johns, well-known in the metal scene . The new album was released in April 2019 and is called "Summon the Hordes". The album received consistently good to very good ratings from the international press.
