Helrunar is a German pagan metal - band from Münster / Osnabrück .

history

Helrunar was founded in spring 2001. The band name is derived from the book Helrunar , published in 1997 by Jan Fries : Ein Handbuch der Runenmagie ; "Helrunar" means " those whispering with Hel ".

In 2003 the band recorded the first demo Grátr , which was released in December of the same year and is now sold out. In the summer of 2004, the band signed their first record deal with Prophecy Productions . At the end of 2004 she recorded Hauch wird Sturm for a split CD with Nachtmahr , which was released in May 2005. In December of the same year she released her first regular album Frostnacht on the Prophecy Productions sub-label Lupus Lounge. In August 2007 the band played on the Summer Breeze , in October their second album Baldr ok Íss was released . On March 29, 2008 there was a performance at the Ragnarök Festival .

On June 17th, 2008 guitarist Tim "Dionysos" Funke announced his departure from the band. Since a replacement could not be found so quickly, the planned tour and all other concerts were canceled for the time being. On August 28, 2009, Helrunar played her first concert in almost a year and a half at the Wolfszeit Festival with a new line-up.

The concept double album Sól , consisting of Sól I - The Thorn in Fog and Sól II - Branches of Memory , was released on January 7, 2011, the first part of which reached number 54 in the German album charts on January 24 .

style

The music by Helrunar conveys a cold atmosphere, typical black metal elements are complemented by clear vocals and acoustic guitar parts.

The German , Norwegian and Old Norse texts are mostly about Nordic mythology , which is why Helrunar is often assigned to Pagan Metal . Critics consider the lyrics to be intelligent and profound. Kenningar are a major influence . Musically, the band is influenced by Norwegian Black Metal from 1990 to 1995, especially the first two Helheim albums, Enslaved , Darkthrone , Satyricon , the first three Ulver albums and Taake . Inhonorus from stormbringer.at describes that the band experimented heavily with the Swedish death metal sound on their 2015 album Niederkunfft , but did not come close to the flagship album Sól .
