Árstíðir Lífsins ( dt. "Seasons of Life"; also simplifies Árstíðir Lifsins pronounced) is a German - Icelandic pagan metal - band .

history

The project was started in 2008 by guitarist Stefán Drechsler with the intention of approaching Old Norse literature , art and history in a musical and demanding way. Drechsler had already co-founded the Bad Segeberger Pagan Metal group Kerbenok in 2000 . A short time later, the two singers Jorge Scholz, who was previously active in the Kiel Viking Metal Formation Drautran , and Marcel Dreckmann, front man of the group Helrunar, joined them. At the same time, the Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Árni Bergur Zoëga, who took on all the drums and percussion tasks, as well as playing all string instruments for Árstíðir Lífsins, joined the band.

In October 2010 the debut album Jǫtunheima dolgferð ( Eng . "The way of the dagger in Jötunheim") was released via Ván Records , which has a playing length of over 70 minutes as a double vinyl. The successor work Vápna lækjar eldr appeared in May 2012. Scholz left the project in 2013 for personal reasons, from then on Dreckmann, Dtechsler and Zoëga took over all vocal tracks. (Scholz, in turn, joined Fyrnask as guitarist in 2014 ) In addition to an EP and a split with Helrunar, the third album Aldafǫðr ok munka dróttinn was released in December 2014. At the end of April 2019, the current, fourth full-fledged album Saga á tveim tungum I: Vápn was released ok viðr .

style

In addition to strong influences from the second wave of Black Metal , Drechsler also incorporated traditional folk and modern ambient elements into the music of Árstíðir Lífsins. Although the guttural singing dominates, the clear singing is versatile and ranges from deep choral singing to narrative tones. The texts are written exclusively in the Old Norse language and deal with topics from the Nordic - Germanic world of legends and neo-pagan - spiritual topics. In addition to the rhythm instruments typical of the genre, viola , cello , vibraphone , piano and organ are also used.
