Mor Dagor is a death metal band from Essen, founded in 1996 .

The name comes from the fictional language Sindarin created by JRR Tolkien and means something like dark battle . In its early phase, the band is mainly assigned to Black Metal , but has increasingly developed in the course of the band's history in the direction of Death Metal.

history

Mor Dagor was founded in 1996 by drummer Torturer, singer Grond and guitarist T. in Essen. After two years, both Grond and T. left the band and were replaced by Beast and Pestilence. The mini-CD Bloodstream was recorded with this line-up.

Together with bassist Lord Ashtaroth from Belgium , the band played various live performances until December 2001 when the first studio album Human Execution was released. The album, like its predecessor Bloodstream, was recorded in the Essen CKB studio.

Despite the fact that Torturer joined the Austrian death metal band Belphegor at this time, an extensive European tour followed in 2003 with Cirith Gorgor and Asmodeus . In 2004 Lord Ashtaroth separated from the band, which at that time was busy working on the successor to Human Execution . In the same year the recordings for the second album Necropedophilia took place , which was published in addition to a new edition by Human Execution via Twilight Distribution.

The following year Ketzer Records released a split EP with Cirith Gorgor. At that time, Beast left the band.

In 2006 the band was completed by Schmied and Impaler and began work on Mk. IV , which was recorded and produced by Andy Classen in his Stage One studio . The album was released on July 17, 2009. At this time Pestilence left the band and was only replaced by Lycanthrope a year later. In October 2011, the Raid on Mankind Tour began together with Dawn of Fate.

In 2012 the band could be seen at the Kings of Black Metal Festival in Alsfeld .

After completing individual shows in 2013, the band announced a successor to Mk. IV on their official homepage , which will be recorded and produced again in December 2013 by Andy Classen in the Stage One Studios.

style

On early releases, the band played a raw, but technically demanding Black Metal. With upcoming releases, this increasingly gave way to Death Metal elements, which are primarily noticeable through increased tempos and more complex song structures. The online magazine Metal1 evaluates the current album by the band Mk. IV as a “hussar piece”, with which the band succeeds in “acting in a variety of ways in a genre such as war black metal that is prejudiced for monotony and stupidity (...) without being involved to lose brutality ".

In general, the sound is characterized by the driving drumming torturers, which is characterized above all by fast blastbeat and double bass techniques. According to Schmied, the texts refer to "war, or the struggle between people and religions".
