The Agrypninae are a worldwide subfamily of the click beetles (Elateridae). It includes around 2500 species in 120 genera . According to Leschen, Beutel & Lawrence (2010) the subfamily includes the formerly recognized subfamilies Chalcolepidiinae, Hemirhipinae, Octocryptinae and Tetralobinae. After an investigation of rDNA and mtDNA of the weakly sclerotized groups of the Elateroidea by Kundrata & Bocak (2011) it was shown that the previously accepted or assumed classification of snail-shell beetles had to be abandoned and the group, which up until then had been in the family rank, as the Drilini tribe of the subfamily Agrypninae was attributed.
features
The subfamily is characterized by two autapomorphies defined: In the imagines the spring on the outer side of each claw Prätarsen one or more strong bristles and at the rear wings no wedge cell is formed.
The larvae can be recognized by their triangular, tapering postmentum , the simple mandibles without retinaculum and the slightly sclerotized trunk segments with a notched ninth tergum .
Taxonomy and systematics
The subfamily is divided into the following ten tribes :
- Agrypnini Candèze, 1857
- Anaissini Golbach, 1984
- Cleidecostini Johnson, 2002 (= Heligmini)
- Hemirhipini Candèze, 1857
- Monocrepidiini Candèze, 1859 (= Conoderini, Oophorini)
- Platycrepidiini Costa, 1993
- Pseudomelanactini Arnett, 1967
- Pyrophorini Candèze, 1863
- Tetralobini Laporte, 1840
- Snail shell beetle (Drilini) Blanchard, 1845
Some authors recognize the tetralobini at the level of a subfamily, while others see them as a tribe. Bag & Leschen (2010) follow the latter opinion. The Hemirhipini were redefined by Casari-Chen (1993) after some genera were recognized as not monophyletic .
