Cirith Gorgor is a black metal band from Helden in the Netherlands . The name of the band comes from JRR Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings , in which Cirith Gorgor (the 'ghost crevice') is the main entrance to Mordor .

history

The band was founded in 1993 by Asmoday and Astaroth Daemonum, back then under the name Dark Sorceress. Half a year later they came across drummer Levithmong; to learn how to play together , they initially covered songs by Slayer , Darkthrone and Mayhem . Around this time the band was joined by bassist Lord Mystic. Around 1994/1995 the band renamed itself Cirith Gorgor. In 1996 Nimroth replaced the band's first singer, who had been dismissed for lack of motivation.

In 1997 they made their first demo recording, Mystic Legends ... , which was produced in the band's rehearsal room and distributed in an edition of 350 copies. About a year later the band signed with Osmose Productions and released their debut album, Onwards to the Spectral Defile , in 1999 . Asmoday left the band for personal reasons immediately after the recordings; he was replaced by Marchosias.

2001 Astaroth Daemonum left the band because of problems with the cast and because of his education, which left him no longer enough time for Cirith Gorgor. It was around this time that their record company decided to stop working with Cirith Gorgor. With the promo MC Demonic Incarnation , the band caught the attention of Ketzer Records. Two of the songs were released on the 7 ”single Through Woods of Darkness and Evil, limited to 666 copies, in cooperation between Ketzer Records and Regimental Records from the USA. Shortly after the recording of Demonic Incarnation , the band found a new guitarist in Inferno from the Dutch band Tartaros, who was involved in the creation of the album Firestorm Apocalypse - Tomorrow Shall Know the Blackest Dawn . The album was released in July 2004 via Ketzer Records, followed in 2005 by a European tour with Lux Ferre and Daemonlord. With the help of Mor Dagor guitarist Pestilence, the song Demonic Incarnation was recorded, which appeared in 2005 on the split -7 ”EP Demonic Incarnation / Memento Mori with Mor Dagor, also via Ketzer Records.

During the following months new material was written; the band split from Nimroth, who did not invest enough time and energy in Cirith Gorgor. In 2006 the album Cirith Gorgor was recorded in the Toneshed Studio with Erwin Hermsen, the guitarist from Mangled, with whom the band had also recorded Mystic Legends ... and Onwards to the Spectral Defile . Levithmong took over the vocals as the band hadn't found a new singer. The album was released on February 26, 2007 via Ketzer Records. For future appearances or tours the band hired Satanael from the band Walpurgisnacht as a guest singer. At the beginning of 2008, she separated from Inferno, who was no longer interested in tours and was no longer available for it. Shortly afterwards the band found a replacement in Odium and decided to take over Satanael as a permanent singer.

Two years later, the band had to look for a singer again because Satanael wanted to leave the country. Former singer Nimroth heard about it, contacted Cirith Gorgor and rejoined the band. Since Odium wanted to concentrate more on his studies and his work, the band also needed a new guitarist; he was replaced by Waldtyr.

style

The band's fast and melodic style is more reminiscent of Swedish black metal bands than Dutch; their second album has been compared to the debut of Setherial . When asked about the main influences, Astaroth Daemonum stated that there are many bands that inspire Cirith Gorgor, but none that they influence; the music comes from the musicians themselves, and that of other bands plays no role in composing. Half of the material on the demo recording and the debut was composed by Asmoday and Astaroth Daemonum; after that Marchosias and Astaroth Daemonum were responsible for composition and arrangement for several years, after the departure of the latter initially only Marchosias, who needs texts for the composition and tries to write music with the atmosphere of the texts.

Her lyrics are mostly about “ war , darkness and the destruction of organized religion. Astaroth used to write in a very symbolic Tolkien-inspired language. ”While Nimroth wrote about Germanic mythology , honor and ancient gods, Astaroth Daemonum's texts dealt with topics such as witchcraft, Tolkien, Goëtie , mythology , darkness, melancholy and history. In the line-up in early 2002, all members except Levithmong contributed to the text, but this was mainly Nimroth's job. Around 1998 one of the musicians described the band members as pagan and stated that all members were completely anti-religious, “this in order to reach the highest level of personal development, this with some useful tools like magic , mysticism , mythology and a few directives classic Satanism (absolutely no LaVey shit). The only god I sacrifice is Bacchus . ”When asked about Satanism and religiosity, Satanael said that the band was not religious, did not believe in God and therefore did not believe in the devil . However, Satanism is a powerful tool for expressing hatred of all major religions. Marchosias, on the other hand, emphasizes that Black Metal is satanic by definition, and describes Satan as a force that lingers inside and at the same time connects the entire cosmos. He described Cirith Gorgor as a "spiritual collective based on satanic morality".
