Districts

The following places belonged to the municipality:

  • Helden and Panningen, two villages that have grown together, with a total of 13,500 inhabitants; the municipal administration was located in the district of Panningen;
  • Beringe, 2.5 km west of Helden-Panningen, with about 2,100 inhabitants;
  • Egchel, on the southwest edge of Helden-Panningen, with about 1,000 inhabitants;
  • Grashoek, 3 km northwest of Helden-Panningen, with about 1,700 inhabitants;
  • Koningslust, 3 km north of Helden-Panningen, with 1,200 inhabitants.

Location, traffic, economy

The former municipality is located about 15 km west of Venlo, on the edge of the "de Peel" moorland. Just north of the Koningslust district is exit 38 of the A67 Eindhoven - Venlo motorway . The nearest train station is in Venlo, around 15 km away. The Fietsallee cycle path on the North Canal runs through the village.

The twin village of Helden-Panningen is the region's economic, shopping and educational center. In 1961, the Philips group founded an equipment factory here, but it no longer exists. But there are still many small factories, commercial and trading companies in the village. In the other places agriculture and horticulture predominate. There is a large psychiatric sanatorium in the village of Koningslust.

history

The area was mentioned in 1279 as the possession of the cauldron glory. It later came to the Duchy of Geldern . In the 17th century there was a so-called schepenbank in Helden-Panningen , a very important jury. Like Maasbree , Helden-Panningen came to the Kingdom of Prussia in the early 18th century . Although the Prussians promoted trade and industry, they also demanded meticulous municipal administration and high war taxes during the Silesian Wars of 1740–1763. After the French period (1789-1815) it came to the Kingdom of the Netherlands; then Helden-Panningen 1830-1840 was temporarily Belgian . Between 1840 and 1940, again under Dutch rule, the people here had a meager existence in agriculture.

The community suffered a lot during World War II . The resistance against the German occupier was relatively strong, which led to several reprisals, u. a. Shootings, led. In November 1944 the community was conquered by the Allies after heavy fighting, but remained close to the front until March 1945, which led to further war damage. After 1950 there was economic progress, among other things through the settlement of industrial companies.

tourism

Beringe is located on the Northern Canal, which dates from around 1810 and was intended to be part of a waterway to France. The canal is now used for tourist purposes. Helden has a small forest where walking is possible and a campsite. More tourist attractions are to be created in the future.

Town twinning

As part of the 5 × Beringen International Foundation, the Beringe district has a partnership with (almost) places of the same name in four other countries, namely:
