history

The population in Kessel in 2007

The place was built in the 10th century at the foot of a watchtower on the banks of the Meuse . The first written records date from the 11th century. The tower became the Motte Kasteel de Keverberg , seat of the Counts of Kessel . This family also founded the city of Grevenbroich around 1300 . Due to financial difficulties, the village of Kessel was sold by Hendrik V to Rainald I von Geldern in 1279 . On the morning of May 10, 1940 (first day of the western campaign ), German troops marched through Kessel on their advance; Soldiers occupied the castle as a lookout point. On November 17, 1944, before their retreat, soldiers blew up the church tower (so that it could not be used as a lookout), tried to blow up the castle and set it on fire. In 1953 the former municipality of Kessel bought the ruins. In October 2011 it was decided to rebuild the castle. It was transferred to the 'Stichting Behoud Kasteel De Keverberg' (Foundation for the Preservation of Castle De Keverberg). A construction company started construction in September 2014; about a year later it was finished.
