Ton Engels (* 1952 in Helden-Panningen ) is a Dutch guitarist and singer-songwriter .

Life

Engels started playing the guitar as a child. In 1977 he recorded pieces by Scott Joplin played on guitar for an album in London . Two years later the album A Picking Fool followed with his own band with compositions by Scott Joplin, Frank Zappa and Django Reinhardt .

In 1982 he founded the group Blowbeat with Cor Mutsers and René Creemers , which became known mainly in Germany and with which he recorded several albums. In 1995 he recorded the album Plat , on which he sang songs in the Limburg dialect. In 2000 he taught songwriting at the Fontys Rock Academie in Tilburg. In the same year the album Wermer as Vandaag was released , the songs of which he presented on a live tour through the Netherlands with Eric Coenen and Arthur Lijten .

Engels has been working with the singer Frédérique Spigt since 2002. In 2004 he founded the record label Volcano Records and released his album Welkom Bej De Minse with compositions by Bertus Borgers, Pieter Douma and Hein Offermans and several string arrangements by Frans de Berg.

In 2006, the album In Het Zuiden Opklaringen was created with the pianist and composer Egbert Derix and his Searing Quartet . In 2007 he worked on the debut album of the singer-songwriter Ian Annesson . In the same year he recorded his fourth dialect album Wies merge with the accompanying band De Medeplichtigen , which contains songs by Tom Waits , Randy Newman and Bob Dylan in addition to his own works .
