Necrophagist was a German death metal band from Gaggenau . The name of the band is derived from " necrophagy " and means "eater of the dead". The band was internationally recognized as one of the leading technical death metal projects.

history

The band was founded in 1992 by Muhammed Suiçmez. The then 17-year-old musician (born November 28, 1975 in Karlsruhe as the son of Turkish parents) had learned to play the guitar by himself because of his parents' negative attitude. The first demo "Requiems of Festered Gore" was recorded in the year it was founded, followed by a demo called "Necrophagist" three years later. After these demo recordings, stylistically influenced by bands like Morbid Angel , Atheist or Death , the project's first studio album was created in 1999: Onset of Putrefaction . Suiçmez realized this album after all the band members left the group shortly before the recording, almost single-handedly, played almost all guitar and bass tracks himself, and took over the drum programming as well as the vocals. All the lyrics and the music were also by him (Suiçmez claims to have written these at the age of 14 and 18 respectively). Despite the small number of copies that are usually self-published, the album became relatively well known in the underground scene and record companies expressed their first interest in Suiçmez's project.

Without the support of a label, the band's fame increased by being seen in the opening act for metal groups such as Cannibal Corpse , Napalm Death or Sinister and being represented at international festivals all the way to the USA.

In 2002 Christian Münzner (now Spawn of Possession and Alkaloid) joined the band as the second guitarist. The second album by Necrophagist, Epitaph , was finally released in 2004 on the US independent label Relapse Records . For this purpose, the line-up was completed with Stefan Fimmers (bass) and Hannes Großmann (drums). In 2006 a music book and tablature book for the album was published. Also in 2004 Relapse Records and Willowtip Records took over the worldwide distribution of a re-release of the first album Onset of Putrefaction, supplemented by additional soundtracks . This also included two bonus tracks from a 1995 demo tape by the group.

Münzner left the band in 2006, Großmann (then Obscura , now Alkaloid) in 2007 and the two were replaced by Sami Raatikainen (guitar) and Marco Minnemann (drums). The latter was in turn replaced by Romain Goulon in 2008.

Necrophagist toured the United States and Europe as co- headlining metal tours in 2006 and 2007 after Suiçmez had overcome a serious illness in 2005, about which nothing was known .

Suiçmez is still under contract with Necrophagist 2007 with Relapse Records, as a guitarist the musician is contractually bound to Ibanez guitars , which in turn promote musical instruments with the artist.

In April 2016 Romain Goulon hinted at the "death" of the band in a publication on Facebook .
