Montjalin Castle

Sauvigny-le-Bois is a French commune with 708 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Yonne department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Sauvigny-le-Bois is 3.5 kilometers northeast of Avallon on the D86 départementale route . The hamlets of Montjalin, Les Batées, Faix, Pont de Cerce, La Tuilerie, Etaules le Haut and Bierry belong to the municipality.

history

In Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD) the place was called Salvigniacum , under the same name it was mentioned in a document in 1217. Therefore, the inhabitants still call themselves Salviniens today. The village belonged to the Anséric de Montréal family . Anséric VI. founded the Saint-Jean-des-Bonhommes priory in Sauvigny-le-Bois in 1210 . From the 17th century, the place became the property of the Les Bertier family . Louis Bénigne François Berthier de Sauvigny (1737–1789) was Intendant (administrator) of Paris and one of the first victims of the French Revolution (1789–1799).

politics

Sauvigny-le-Bois is part of the community association Communauté de communes Avallon, Vezelay, Morvan . Since September 24, 2005 there has been a town partnership with the Italian municipality of Ortona dei Marsi .

Culture and sights

The Montjalin castle dates from the second half of the 18th century. Since 1988 it has been partially entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques (memorials) ( inscrit MH ). Until 2010 it housed a museum with cars of famous heads of state. With the Sauvigny-le-Bois castle , the town has a second castle . This was also built by the Bertier family in the 18th century. One pavilion is older and dates from the 17th century.

In the priory there is a sculpture museum ( musée lapidaire ), in which stone sarcophagi, statues, tombstones and various objects are exhibited. An iron, foldable lectern in the abbey dates from the 14th century. It was classified as a Monument historique in 1919 .
